How does a 3 handicap get 10 in a proam?

Hate to be an old stick in the mud, but this business of assigning caps based on “who knows” in any sort of competition anywhere is pretty awful; it’s just wrong; shows a tremendous lack of basic integrity.  The explanation is no explanation.  One might surmise the practice started when the celebrities were Hollywood types, and a lack of integrity would not have been noticed.

Not on the player’s part, though, unless he requested it somehow.

On a lesser level (but really, on the highest US sports level) Lebron James’s son was named a HS McDonalds All American. Everyone in the game knows he didn’t deserve it. But I’ve heard several LA folks respond that it would be stupid for them not to include Lebron James’s kid. They say it as if integrity isn’t even a consideration anymore. It’s odd times.

It’s not a competition, it’s an exhibition.

You really can’t call it a competition when the entry criteria is your celebrity status or how much money you pony up.

Things don't add up. His partner was +1 and missed the cut. This had to be the most perfect ham and egg hole matchup in the history of best ball.

On his own ball, he would have had to shoot 73,73,73.................as a 10.

Not true at all.  He could have shot 103, 103, 103 as a 10 and they could still shoot -26 net:

Assume the pro only makes birdies, pars and bogeys.  Pro has 13 birdies, 14 bogies, 27 pars.  For the team to have a best ball at -26, Rodgers has to be -13 net on the 14 holes pro made bogies.  On the other 40 holes, he could make double bogey every time and still win, since Pro was -13 on those holes.  40 net doubles, plus -13 net for 14 holes totals +63 net for 54 holes.  Add 30 strokes (10 times three rounds) to convert to gross gets to +93 for three rounds, or 72 + 31 = 103 for each round.

Correct….and to break that down further the -13 Rodgers needed to contribute is only 4 1/3 holes per round he needs to do well.

Disclaimer…..of course those 4 holes per round on average need to be on the bogey holes by the pro.

Here's a link (Aaron Rodgers’ ‘crap’ handicap at Pebble Beach? Here’s how it was decided - https://wp.me/p6BubQ-dmS) to the explanation for Rogers 10.  Makes sense to me.

I've read all the links and explanations and still don't understand why they don't use the same system as thousands of amateur events all over the world.  It's called the World Handicap System.

Changing a 3 to a 10 makes this event a joke.

Always amazed at the stringent expectations online, by people that NEVER been in a high level decision-making role nor played in an event like Pebble Beach.  Event's like pebble beach, attract all sorts of amateurs, some with golf skill others not as much.  Those determining Course handicap acknowledge people like Rogers are being pulled in all sorts of directions, so many haven't played in months, but have a low index.  If they had assigned him a 3, I am sure he would have faced serious pressure to live up to his 3, on TV, yet hadn't played in months; and he paid 25k for the privilege; something naysayers handily overlook in their argument.

Most of our members at my last two clubs didn't play back tees, yet many were single digit.  When someone is first back after a lengthy absence, we typically play crappy, too.  You would know that if you play to a 2-4, like me.   Event like that, hosts ask the amateur about his/her game habits.  Highly accomplished people have times when they are away from golf; my longest time was 9 months.  Event managers want amateurs to have a fun experience, while paying a lot to be there.  It would be ludicrous to have them worry about playing to their home course handi, knowing they will be heavily distracted.   As well, they are playing for bragging rights.

I've played in Pro-Ams with tour players, my costs were 5k-8k plus what I spent on the grounds and dinner tabs I picked up.  Spending big bucks to play in a tour pro/am is not about tournament golf or even carding best scores.

Last, it's ridicules for me, if I haven't played in months, to have high-expectations going into a high-profile, televised event that has a very different purpose from me playing in regional amateur events here at home, which I've done many times; one doesn't equal the other.   But you're welcome to think it's a joke.
