Over hozel putter shaft?

Recommended Posts

I bought an Integra X2 putter head and was told the Golf Works "flare tip" shaft would work. I'm not able to get it fully seated and I beat on it pretty hard. Is this not the right shaft? Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

Can you post pix of the putter head without the shaft installed on the hosel?

The challenge MAY be a slightly different flare profile on the shaft, versus the putter.  I looked at one of the late versions of flare tip by Nippon and noticed how much smaller the very tip diameter of the shaft was.   Much like the I.D. on .370 tip shafts, a small variation can really throw a wrench in things.

Post that pic, if you can and I'll check back.

Ha, looking at it again it seems the tip isn't deep enough to fit the whole thing. 🤣

So what shaft might work for this? Am I supposed to trim the putter head?

Flared shafts are not at all universal.  Some are "bell shaped" like the one picured and has a relatively quick taper, common on older bullseye and older Ping putters that had over the hosel design.  Those were .382 as I believe.  There is also a .382 model that doesn't have quite as quick a taper, less "bell" looking, that probably is the answer to that.  That shaft is common on the TM spider slant necks .  I believe KBS makes that, but its been out of stock everywhere for quite some time now.

It measures .34 and seems pretty uniform.

A few careful minutes on a belt sander and that .370 will fit just fine.  Never be afraid to do some fine tuning.  The stud in parallel and just needs to be reduced to make it work.

I would think there is an appropriate shaft that wouldn't require a belt sander. I don't have a belt sander and investing in one to rig a $20 putter head seems like overkill. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm also no expert.

Might not be an appropriate shaft without going to the OEM and getting one.  10 Minutes with a strip of 60 grip sand paper will work too.  I'm sure you can pick up a small roll at your local hardware store.  Or buy a piece designed for a belt sander and cut it and then use it.

You'll soon find out that if you do your own golf repair things rarely fit perfectly and sometimes it require a little sanding or filing to get the job done. Don't go shopping for a new shaft, you'll probably have the same issue with the next one.

Maybe I'm just an optimist but it seems odd that a part that I have seen built a number of times would require removing a few hundredths of material to make work with a standardized part. I would think there would be a part that would work with minimal effort. But again, not an expert.

Thanks all for the ideas. I reached out to the manufacturer and if I need an angle grinder to install this head, I will likely return it instead. 🤣

It's spec'd for a parallel .370 so that should do it, probably should expect some fine tuning with knock off heads (nothing against them, just should be no expectation of serious quality control in a $30 copy).  Or take it to a shop and have a shaft fit to it, probably take 10 minutes. Then off to the course!

I don't think this is spec'd for a .370 shaft. The ID of a .370 is 7mm and the OD of this head is 8.7mm. Removing 1.7mm of steel isn't a few swipes with 80 grit. 🤣

Only you can make that determination since we don't have the pieces in front of us.  It's a cheaper head and I'd be taking the stud to the grinder until it fits.  Or take a taper shaft and tip trim a little.  It wouldn't take much to get it where you need it.  The slight bit of taper won't be a problem (a little Quick Center will work fine).

That could be the problem - saw one for sale from some outfit and they are advertising it as such, maybe it is defective, or maybe the site was wrong, who knows.  Maybe just return it, see if a replacement is different, or you could still just take it into a club repair guy/gal and get an opinion (if that is available nearby).  Or toss it - it is backwards after all.  😉

No idea, these .390 list an ID of .355. That's the first .390 I've seen.

Yes that is the shaft I think you need. I was gonna mention siege, they have just about any color you could imagine too.

The head measures .34 so a .355 should totally fit, thanks!

<edit> I ordered the satin black.
