Mizuno 225 or PXG gen 6 irons

All,

Need some help from people who have played both these sets, I recently got fitted for both sets of clubs. I am not a gorilla swinger like the standard wrx golfer😀. Swing speed with 7 iron was 83mph and I was getting an average 159 carry with the Mizuno and 166 carry with the Pxg club, both same loft the Mizuno shaft was nippon 105 stiff and pxg was tour elevate 115. My question is I am undecided between both clubs, was surprised at the soft feeling of the pxg as I have never hit a PXG iron before. Just want some honest opinions on either iron, thanks for your help in advance.

PXG no brainer.

Went thru this. Had Gen2Ps and got MP20HMBs, which couldn’t knock out my Gen2.

Got fit to both 225 and 223s then same week (both modest improvements over my gen2P, worth the upgrade) then went to PXG fitting… lights out.

Significantly better. Hit the 225s one last time. Not close. PXG better in ever single performance category. Faster, longer, spin/landing angle more optimal, and namely… WAY MORE CONSISTENT on misses (especially toe side).

Felt way better too. Feedback on the PXG is great but they weren’t harsh off center like the 225.

223s were better than the 225s even, but spun too much and launched too high. Personally unimpressed with the 225s, considered the 223 briefly but it wasn’t a good fit.

Add in an ability to outright nut your specs with PXG (fitting process final customization is swingweight through their snap in weight system)… no brainer. Seriously.

The stock shaft selection on PXG is meh, but even fully loaded the 5-PW was only a few hundred more than 225s similarly built. Difference was those 225/223s were going to be D6 or heavier (even with b-weight heads) and the PXG was whatever swing weight I wanted.

I found the center way more with D4… so we went D4.

No chance I would ever consider the 225 vs the gen6 if properly fit, ESPECIALLY if you need +/- length.

Now if you have the 225s would I say switch for 1700? Nah. Probably not. But the PXG is easily a few hundred better, and reality is if 2-300 bucks is a make or break amount you shouldn’t actually be buying either.

Thank you for taking time to reply, if I had tried the 225s first it might have been a different story. I like the nippon pro shaft in the 225s, but the evaluate tour suited me fine in the gen 6 and for me I was putting some good numbers up with it. With your review it just pushed me into the pxg camp and I have ordered my irons this morning.

The elevate is a nice shaft if it suits you, to me the most frustrating thing with pxg was upcharge for x100s…

I bet you will be very happy. I still recommend the PXG fitting if you can do it (unless you already have), just so they can nail the specs.

The 225/HMBs have underwhelmed me. The 223s were way better in every way tbh, but monster spin and launch killed my numbers and heavy as in my specs.

I think making a consistent hollow iron is tougher than some give credit. PXG, TM, and cally seem to have the formula, but Ping, mizzy, and others haven’t found their groove yet.

I still go Gen6P currently if you give me a blank check and a fitting. Maybe something muria I didn’t hit, and I would hit the Edel SMS, but the PXG has erased all doubt from my bag.

Hoping does the same for you.

I went to a PXG fitting and that’s what sold it to me, I am lucky as I am in the UK at the moment and all the PXG fittings are free. I had a full bag fitting, Gen 6 driver was nice and the same goes for the Gen 6 fairway wood. Not enough of a difference to knock my cobra Ltdx ls driver and 5 wood out of the bag though. Wedges were really nice, but I can’t see myself spending that kind of money on a wedge when my vokeys do the same job. It was the irons that I was so impressed with, ordered them this morning and now have to wait for them to arrive.

I’m 4 strokes better than my handicap is arccos after 3 rounds with the gen6.

ABSURDLY CONSISTENT.

Not a single flyer. Everything goes the basically same distance if ur on the grooves. Granted it won’t fix your swing, but nailing the swing weight made me so much better at striking center.

They are truly fabulous.

The biggest key is the ability to nail ur ideal swing weight… cannot be understated. Seriously.

They also just lowered the prices on their shaft upgrades significantly.  Emailed to ask about money back as I got them in the very beginning with the +39/shaft (now +18)… my dealer said they would store credit me the difference. I’m either adding the 4 iron or getting a putter.

Im so incredibly satisfied with the clubs.

225's for me.  I've got 2 sets!!  One satin and the other black.  Had the best season of golf of my life last year and can contribute much of that to the 225's.  They just flat out work for me.  I also love their appearance as a bonus.

Have you hit the PXG?

Most haven’t.

225s aren’t bad clubs at all, and their predecessors MP20HMB were solid as well, but neither compares to PXG of respective years.

YMMV, but curious if you have hit them both.

Looks do matter, 100%.

I prefer the overall look of the 225s (look more like a blade) and the one gripe I have with the PXG looks is the sole being 2 colors; don't love that tbh.

However, I do love the back contrast actually (just not the sole), and behind the ball the soft/satin/polished look of the PXGs is amazing and offers no glare.

Mizuno knows how to style an iron, anyone who disagrees is a bit unreasonable.

Not exactly the right comparison, but I went from PXG Gen 3 0311P irons to the Mizuno Pro 225s.  When I played the PXGs, I thought they were pretty much the best irons I’d ever hit.  Long, consistent, felt soft, etc….but I tried the 225s out after reading some reviews and seeing the looks of them.  I think the Mizunos are actually better than my old PXGs.  They are a smaller profile, have a great soft feeling and I hit them well.  I like the look a little better.  I have read the new Gen 6s are amazing, but I think I’ll stick with the Mizunos for a while.

My vote is for PXG, but as you can see by my signature I’m a fanboy. Love their stuff and they take care of the heroes.

More than satisfied, the only club that I didn’t hit particularly well was the 6 iron. But that was down to a couple of heavy strikes by me, having the clubs at 2 degrees down also sorted out my draw. It’s gone from a 10 yard draw to only a couple of yards draw and I can shoot straighter at the flags now, very much in the honeymoon phase but I really like the feel from the clubs. I have played Mizuno irons pretty much all my golfing career, but these have to be right up there in top 3 sets I have had.

There tungsten screws for weighting. The black portion iron is a single piece with the body; forged and beautifully milled.

Let’s hope honeymoon gives way to a beautiful marriage. I’m 5 rounds in now; broke 80 2x and my arccos is saying my iron play is consistently 2 strokes gained vs my handicap. Notable improvement.
