First Move Down in Transition

Recommended Posts

I’ve noticed a lot of pros have a drop of their hands in transition. I’ve tried a bunch of feels but can’t seem to get this effect to happen. My hands still dart out. Things like feeling them drop straight down, keeping back to target just don’t seem to work. What feels/drills have been successful for some of you?

Instead of down, I need to feel like the first move with my hands is away from the ball. Like to 7:30 if the target is 12:00

They're not interfering with the club's natural route out to the ball, and sounds like you might be.

I swung out from underneath myself, from the lower part of my body.   Byron Nelson

One of my favorite drills and usually part of my warmup routine is what Tiger is doing here starting at 0:13

I have been drilling this for the last month. It will take more time. But I have been exaggerating my hands falling away from thr ball once my lead arm reaches parallel in the backswing.

There could possibly be an issue not allowing this.

Ball too far forward.

Stuck on the right side

Shoulders spinning out.

Anyone of those would basically make it impossible.

From a period of shanks, right handed player, my coach got me to lead with my left elbow towards the ball, shallowing the strike and squaring the face. It’s really worked

When I run into this issue it’s nearly always too much tension in arms and shoulders.

It’s your swing concept of how you hit the ball in the impact interval/bottom of the swing. From shaft parallel and through.

Your transition needs to set that part up, but if that part is wrong then you won’t be incentivized to get to the proper delivery.

Do you feel like you can strike the ball really well/efficiently starting from p6/shaft parallel on the downswing?

Solid hip movement is a big key. Hips need mature movement for this to work. If you drop lead hip into ball line too much, or just sway too much this won't really hold up and you'll find yourself reverting to a stall/flip move.

Hardest club to pull this off with is driver and that's where you will see if hips are up to it. I can fake it with mid irons but not with driver or other longer clubs. If the levering of hip joints are correct, with the right tilts too, it's astonishing what a difference that alone makes.

Played 5 rounds this year, only had one good one and it's because I'm caught between old & new on this. Always been hands behind, match it up at impact with stall and flip kind, but there's more to this than a direction. Trust the direction but there's other changes in the offing too.

How often do you see people with the issue of ball to far forward leading to this issue?

would this fall inside an acceptable range for a 9 iron or would you consider that too far forward?

Yes that’s too forward and I see it fairly often.

@Dufferonius, can you expand on what's wrong with his set-up?

He's way out over his lead leg, for starters.  Should look more like this:

(I tend to have a good deal more forward shaft lean than that at setup, but, that's me.)

Perhaps the hands-dropping-in-transition is an unconscious consequence of proper sequencing and not an overt thought/action.  For example, if the first move from the top is a small bump of the lead hip towards the target, this will automatically drop the hands, shallow the shaft, and move the bottom of the swing towards the target.  All good things.

A small bump of the hips toward the target does not guarantee a drop of the hands and automatic shallowing.

Thanks for your input, but unless there’s some other things you haven’t pointed out yet I think we can say it’s an exaggeration to say “it’s all wrong”. Am I stacked over my front leg to much? Probably. I have been putting a bump of the hips forward, and maybe I overdid it. Seems like my ball position being off makes a difference in how my setup looks. Just took a shot of address with the ball position further back, just forward of the sternum for a 9 iron. It will take some time to get used to, it seems so far back! Had to put down an alignment rod and some ball sleeves for foot spacing to ensure I was setting up with the ball back far enough.

I sooner not debate semantics :classic_wink:

Anyway, that last photo looked much better than the first.  I think if you carefully compare the two to one another you'll see several differences.  (You may want a bit more shaft lean.  The way my first coach put it is point the butt of the shaft at your first belt loop forward of your centerline.)

Another thing you can do to see the differences is take down-line photos of your old and new setups.

Maybe it’s semantics but it’s easier for people to follow your meaning if you use more precise language. If you needed to re park a car to move it over a couple inches in a parking spot, would you tell the driver to move it way over? 😉

Slightly more shaft lean at address may be worth experimenting with, but these silly pants have no belt loops! 🤪
