S&T Tuck the Hips - Proceed with Caution

Never had any back issues in life, but after working on this on the range friday I'm currently sitting with an ice pack on my lower back and have trouble getting up, cannot stand up straight and am in a lot of pain.  It's likely shut me down for a few weeks.  It didn't even seem like a lot of stress on my back at the time, but the next day it got progressively worse.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.  Do you think it's a muscle issue?  Maybe disc?   If it's concerning enough, you should get an MRI done asap.

I've never been to a chiropractor but headed there today.  I've always thought they were witch doctors and now I have to fall on my sword and see if they can help me.  Supposed to play on vacation Thursday morning and I don't see that happening now.

It's possible you put the spine too far into flexion. We want the spine to be neutral (which is a slight curve) in the golf swing. Many people are anteriorly tilted at the pelvis so tucking the hips puts them into neutral. However, if you are already neutral at address then tuck the hips you're going to be in flexion, which can add stress to the spine. For some early extension can also cause people to stand up and flex their lumbar spine. Hard to know if this is what happened with you though, just one possible guess. As the extent of how bad it'll be no way of knowing on here obviously, would need to see someone in person.

Get some accessory exercises from the chiro to help any pain in the future, if not they're just fixing short term issues and you'll be back soon for another quick fix. 

 

If they don't then seek out an athletic therapist, they'll hopefully find the issue and give you a list of exercises to fix that.

Pain is worst in trail side (right side for right handers) 

 

What sucks is it was not even working for what I was trying to do or I was not even doing it right. The ball just kept going higher and higher which means I was tilting more and more. The moment I focused on getting my entire body more forward, and told myself to hit the ball as low as I could to the ball flight instantly came down, and I was on my lead side at impact.

You may be thrusting the hips early (early extension) rather than tucking the hips. The spine extension should be from the thorax up not lower back and "squeezing the buns" helps stabilize the lower back.

If the discs are misaligned slightly, then getting your back cracked by the chiro will help temporarily.  I go to mine every 3 months.  Hopefully he also specializes in soft tissue therapy as well as that can help in loosening up any knots and tight muscles around the affected area.  Heating pads and stims are bonuses.

I would take some time off from golf. If you don't, you may be looking at a life long problem.

Golf is the lifelong problem…
