3 club challenge - best strategies?

Just a fun family 2 man scramble - but we are using only 3 clubs for 6 of the holes

360y - par 4

370y - par 4

404y - par4

110y - par 3

175y - par 3

490y - par 5

 

I'm tempted to do something like 5w + 7i + wedge and putt with the 5 wood or belly wedge...I'd think we'd be around the green alot on approach shots - placing more value on having a wedge.

But then it might be a bad move to not have a putter and potentially give away makeable putts.

 

I'm thinking of Driver+8i+putter as well.

That's what I would do, should be able to hit 5w - wedge into the first two 4's, got both the par 3 yardages covered, chance to go 5w - 5w on the par 5. 

 

Scramble could change things a bit though. Are you sharing the clubs or do you each take 3? If its the later your partner could carry a driver and a putter.

I have won a couple of 3-club challenges with driver-7i-PW. Based on the yardages above, that's what I would go with.

I always putt with a wood in these challenges. It's not significantly harder than putting with an actual putter, in my experience. I'd probably go 3w, 6i, 50-degree.

Not sure about no putter -  Never underestimate how important your putter is if your scrambling on to the green. Based on the yardages and it’s a scramble - cover the par 3s and trying to be able to get on the par 4 i regulation or giving yourself a good up and down opportunity would be my tactic (and yes, I’m my golf gangs reigning 3 club champ 😅)

2 years ago, I won a 3 club shootout covering 9 holes. I used 5 wood, 8 iron and 52* wedge. That 52* is what won it for me as not many others had such lofted wedge for chipping out of greenside rough. It was my putter that day as I've used it few other times during my regular golf. Ha

Putting with the leading edge of a wedge is very easy. Hitting a putter out of the rough over a bunker is not.

Wasn't thinking of taking a wedge out - wedge and putter would be a given for me. Given the yardages, a 180 yd club would seem reasonable with a wedge and putter?

I'd personally go 3w-7i-50

 

3w covers all the non-par 3 tee shots. I can hit my 3w 255-270 off the tee, 7i goes 170ish, 50 covers 110-125.

So:

360y - 250 = 110

 

370y - 260 = 120

 

404y - 250 = 154 (have to manage a 7i here

 

110y - Easy 50

 

175y - Stock 7i

 

490y - 250+250 - wedge putt

I’d go 5W, 8i, 56. 5W is a reliable 250 club. Much easier for me to count on my 5W than driver. 8i is a good 165/170 club, but I can throttle back or try to nuke one as necessary. Would putt with 5W for close range and am surprisingly comfortable chipping on the green with 56 for longer/lag putts.
