How to post score - extreme temp tee etc

Recommended Posts

The course was hammered with 4 inches of rain Tuesday night. As of today the front 9 is closed still due to damage.

A friend and I played 18 holes today, the back 9 twice. Normally, I’d post two 9 hole scores but I have some questions and not sure how to handle it.

18 is a 504 yard par 5 and stroke hole 2. A stream flooded and dumped silt in the fairway and they set up temporary tees that were 120 yards from the hole, maybe 110 to center…. So it’s a short par 3 essentially. I shot a 4 and 3 from that tee location.

On 12 during our second loop, a tree crew was in the fairway clearing a tree. They weren’t there the first time we went through. Instead of skipping the hole, we just dropped a ball in the fairway and played it as a par 3.

For #12, it’s easy enough to count it as a hole not played and just post a net par.

I’m not sure about how to handle 18. I understand there’s a way to change the slope/rating based on distances that change. I don’t see an obvious way to do that in the GHIN app on my phone though.

An option would be to post net pars for both times it was played, count it as a hole not played.

How would you handle posting the round or would you just not bother?

I probably should get some popcorn for the responses😋

While the real rules gurus might have a better opinion, this feels like one of those "rounds" (if you can actually call it that) to chalk up to exercise and "just happy to be out". In the grand scheme of things, assuming you play reasonably regularly, not posting this particular weird weather experience will have no impact on your handicap calculation from a broad perspective.

Hopefully you took pictures - sounds like quite the storm!

Basically the round(s) shouldn't be postable because the tees appear to be more than 100 yards shorter than they should be.

The par 5 was almost 400 yards short by itself. And it's not likely you (or anyone) would even bother to try to re-calc the course rating and slope based on the day's "changes" to come up with a real postable round.

I'd say just dump the round. Don't post either 9.

You can read through Appendix G if you like (I didn't) and perhaps there IS a way to calc it and post it but I personally wouldn't bother.

Appendix G

Appendix G had the answer. A course distance change of 300+ yards is ineligible to be posted unless authorized by an authority. I paraphrased btw.

Thanks for giving me that link.

IT does, and probably in the part you didn't read.

"If approved by the Authorized Association, the issuance of a temporary Course Rating and Slope Rating is determined by the Handicap Committee and/or the Authorized Association following the procedure set out below:"

The Table isn't something to be used by each and every one of us who plays a course from a different yardage, its for use by a Committee and the Association.  For the OP, the only reasonable way to post that round is to consider consider those affected holes to be "not played", and record "par plus handicap strokes".  Or better, check with the Handicap Committee (if possible) or the Pro Shop  to see whether you should post or not.

Yup, I missed that completely.

Sounds like I played a practice round, lol.

This happened to me twice this year. Something got turned into a par III cause the regular tee area was muddy as hell. One time I pared it so I just put 4 like the par 4 it was to be, but the 2nd time I was like this is a practice round.
