The perfect irons !!??!!

Hogan Apex ‘99s for when I’m playing well, and Mizuno MX300s for the rest of the time.

Tourstage Z101 3-6 and Bridgestone J33MB 7-W. The best irons I've ever laid hands on. I still play this combo when playing a vintage bag, but they just don't wear good enough for daily play.

On a scale of 1-5:

 

PXG 0317 CB - 4.9 - I haven’t felt anything this soft with great performance since my Mizuno days that ended when I replaced the 900 Tours while chasing more distance.

 

PXG 0211 ST - 4.8 - such incredible turf interaction.  I would have never thought these would be a forgiving and soft club when just looking at them.

 

PXG Gen 5T - 4.5 - best goo filled club made since the Gen 3T, for softness

 

ZX7 - 4.5 - son plays them and loves them.  I really like them. 

 

PXG is killing it for me with their irons.  I’m leaving room at the top just in case (0317 T????)

I'll go PXG 0311 4ST.  Just absolutely tremendous feel/sound, turf interaction, ball flight and consistency.  Honorable mention BeCu ISI.  

 

I have considered wilson staff blade and blueprint in that order and I don't know if they would win the fight (have not ordered either but do have a sweet BP 2-iron).  

 

Every time I look at them I fail to make the purchase.  I will eventually give in.

Predictably they are my Nike VR Pros. For me, I couldn't really ask a set of irons to do much more:

 

- Enough help for when I don't quite catch the middle (low down in the face and towards the heel)

- No help where I don't need it (very little offset, not much help out on the toe where I rarely strike the ball)

- Easy to vary trajectory depending on need

- Can typically shape the ball the direction I need (we will ignore the ugly double cross that led to a 7 on our 15th last week)

- Great feel and sound when struck crisply

- Excellent distance (7 iron is good for 165)

- Perfect shaft for me (S400)

- Possibility to saw off the follow through and pretend you're Tommy Fleetwood 🙂

- Cheap (£220 second hand in the UK)

Wilson Staff FG-51 with twice soft stepped DG120 X100 shafts 1/4” short. Great compact size, some offset, and a great leading edge. The dense Wilson blade feel kicked out the legendary ‘99 Hogan Apex blades and these will be my irons for a long time.

Just got some PP 9003 SNs a few weeks ago and still surprised how close to the green the ball gets when i chunk the piss out of it. Look great and feel great when I find the middle too. Only really had one other true gamer set of irons though, but I hope not to change any time soon.

There’s been a lot of sets lately. I honestly think being confident you have the right shaft in your irons is a big part of it
