Carrying two drivers!?!? (Help)

I had a thought to put two drivers in the bag, I don’t use 3 wood at all other than in a scramble that I might play once every few weeks so it might be worth putting two drivers into play. I was thinking a safety driver and a bomber driver. Does anyone have any experience or tips that might help?

Higher loft, lower loft, short shaft, tee heights, design of heads etc

Cheers!

I tried the two driver setup about 10 years ago.  First driver was 44.5 inches with a 80 gram shaft, 9*(true loft 9.8), and heavy head with additional hot melt.  Mainly used on tight holes where there wasn't too much trouble.  Second driver was the bomber which was 46 inches, 60 grams, 8* cranked open to 7*, with 2 grams of hot melt.  I eventually ended up scrapping the experiment because while the bomber was really long when hit on the screws, it was too erratic and inconsistent to the point where it got me in more trouble than it was worth.  If you're a good driver of the ball however, it may work out.  I put my 13*, 3 metal back in the bag and swore I would never do the 2 driver setup again, lol.

Gonna be an expensive experiment.

This is one of those areas where I'm compelled to say "if you don't know the how then why bother".

Not trying to be rude but if you have to ask then you're in for a lot of headache. What you want to do is pretty simple to achieve if you understand all.of the dynamics of driver setups, gear effect, etc.

I will say this...most people who do this have a fade driver and draw driver. Probably better for you to just go mini-driver for the fairway finder setup...

I did this last year, and have done it off and on and like the setup, although right now I'm back to a larger-headed 3w as my second tee option. My two driver setup looks like this:

1 - TSR3 8.0 (set D1 to 7.25 and open face) 45.50 inches, Ventus TR Red 60x [Bomber driver, fade biased]

2 - TSR2 9.0 (set to D4 9.75 and closed face) 45.00 inches, (+6 weight added) Ventus TR Red 60x [fairway finder, draw biased]

Same shaft, same swing weight, but one longer and lower lofted, the other shorter and higher lofted.

See my thread linked above.

It's the end of the season nearly for me as I'm a late morning player and I just don't have the gal anymore to play in temps under 50*F so my experiment only lasted 3 rounds. Anyway, I think if you have a very specific course set up like I do, where you simply don't need to bomb it all the time, 2 drivers can work, as long as you can either drop another club OR you don't feel like you need a wood for off the deck longer shots. Either you have a draw driver and fade driver or you do like me and you have a bomb ball set up, and then a fairway winder which has about 40-60 yards between them.

I think it will come down to what ends up being more accurate off the tee next year, a 10-11* driver with a bunch of weight added to it that plays about 42-43", or a standard 3w at 15-16*. I don't really ever need a 250yrd deck shot... sure there are a couple of times where I could hit that shot, but I don't because the risk vs reward usually isn't in my favor. All my longest shots off the ground are with a 7w and they go about 225-230.

What I did notice was that my driver even with added weight became incredibly unstable off the toe, which kind of makes no sense to me but if I hit it even just 1/2" off geometric center... my ball was diving out of the air and hooking pretty bad. My guess is my AoA was just not high enough, with too low of a speed creating too little spin. I would advise you use at least a 10.5* driver, if not even more.

So my bag would end up being something like DR1, DR2, 4w, 7w, 5-LW, P. I would expect the big dawg to go a total of 290-300, the fairway driver to be about 250, the 4w to be about 240, the 7w about 220, 5i 200 and so on.
