Torn between the TSR2 and TSR4

If I were younger, I'd have gone with the TSR4, instead went with TSR2.  Titleist TSR4 brings to mind my old mean low-spin, heavy head, TM-SLDR TP driver. POW.  When my swing was on it was as long as my longest drives using 905S.

If shaft, loft and sleeve settings are equal, and my swing is ON, pure, one is not longer than the other.  The difference between the two drivers shows up when your swing is off...TSR4 will cost yards, while TSR2 forgives me.

Players have to make a decision in their fitting and head selection too of do I want to play the draw and find something that keeps that shot from diving and going left, or do I want to play a fade and maximize distance for that so that I don’t have to hit a draw.

If you watch a tour level fitting, or pay attention to what’s going on it’s guys on tour almost none of them work it both ways with the driver anymore. You either fit to maximize the fade and kill spin on that shot, or you build something that gives you a spin cushion to play the draw.

When drivers had lower MOI, spun more and were more workable it was much easier for amatuers to play both. Now the spin window just isn’t there to do that. Most tour players will revert to their 3w off the tee when needing to turn it over right to left, Scheffler has been a big advocate of this.

If you get fit hitting fades, and the fitter maximizes that, a draw will be a nightmare to try and play on course.

If someone hits a draw and *wanted* to try and hit more of a cut, a fitter could put them in a TSR4 for its fade bias, which would help maximize the fade, but trying to turn it over and make it playable will be an uphill battle for most.

Is the TSR4 known as fade biased?  This is my first full season with it and def a fade play now which makes us “draw” players jumpy 🙂. Not used to looking down the left side…..  good to know, although I can speak for myself. And say it’s a fade driver for me.

We had another Titleist fitting day, and I told the fitter I was not happy with my TSR4, and the results of my last fitting. I told him that my great strikes were longer than my Ping, but the Ping was more consistent. He then came back by saying that I told him I was looking for distance. I responded that I need to be able to play my off center hits, and said that the TSR2 would have been a better choice. He said the 4&2 have the same forgiveness. I’m no scientist, but I don’t understand how a 420 head can have the same forgiveness as a 460 head. I got a bad fitting, and the fitter was a dope.

Fitter seems from your description to just not really be deep into the product research for fitting. TSR2 and TSR4 do have the same face to maximize ball speed retention across face, yet due to placement of weighting in heads, going to play quite a bit differently based upon delivery of player. TSR4 will be quite a bit lower spin and inherently less forgiving if player already is on low side of ideal spin rate for ballspeed and launch and/or strike pattern is higher and towards toe.

Not that I am aware.

I have been a Titleist guy since 1999 and 975D, then in 2006 to 905S, then to 917D3.  Titleist hasn't made a bias driver, least that I currently recall, mostly due to sure-fit sleeves.  The sleeve should dial bias away.

IME, smaller head CC necessitates using the sweet spot or some degree of left or right will result.  My misses with TSR3 were left when my swing was off; it's not as forgiving as TSR2.  I tested it for a month before returning for the TSR2...glad I did.  Now, even when my swing errantly gets lazy, my TSR2 ball still finds the fairway.

After a few sessions, the TSR2 has made it's way to my bag also.  I thought I was set, but misses were killing me at my course, and hte TSR2 seems to be a much better flight and tighter dispersion than the TSR4.  Maybe not as long, but more in play.
