Reshafted Club Feels Awful

Just had a club reshafted and suddenly it is quite painful and drastically more difficult to hit.  Same shaft.  Any insight into what may have caused such a drastic change?

Asking the most obvious question first, are you sure it's the same shaft? I.e. correct model and flex?

Did you check the following?

Swing weight

shaft lenght

same or different head different

Did you use tip weights?

 

If everything is the same I can only see swing weight being the biggest factor

The next most obvious things would be if there were any differences in the tip trimming and/or for an iron shaft it there were tip weights that weren't installed in the reshaft.

Same head, a 4 (reshafted) and a 5.  The builder had the specs for SW and length.  Unfortunately I can't verify SW myself and I don't know if they used tip weights.

As I only had the 4 iron done (broken shaft), I can't verify if trimming or tip weights are different.  Glad to have something to research though, thanks!

What shaft is it? Does it have a fixed logo…or a sticker like KBS shafts?

You lost the poon.  The most common issue when reshafting.  Whatever it was that made the club work is lost.  Nobody knows why, not Howard, Stuart or anybody else.

OTI 75R.  Fixed logo, installed in the exact orientation as the other irons.

orientation is interesting but position in relation to grip/clubhead is more interesting 🙂

take your set and put the clubs next to each other (on a table or against a wall) with the clubheads in the same position and check if there is a constant progression of the logos on the shafts, or if there is something strange with the 4iron ...

It may be possible that the 4 iron's shaft was originally untipped while the new one was cut to spec.

Possibility that it is not fully inserted into the bottom of the hosel.

my guess is that the "repair" was done by using the original broken shaft and adding an extension to get it to length

would probably not make such a drastic difference in feel since the 4iron should be tipped 0.5" in that shaft

What if the break was at the tip or closer to the middle?

that shaft has a 4.7" parallel section ... add extra tip trim ... glue in an extension ... "new" shaft and a reason why the shaft suddenly feels "painful" as the OP said

First, how is the feel different? Lighter, heavier, stiffer, etc. Be specific!

 

Again, check the logo progression. The builder could have done anything in an effort to meet the previous club specs. Tip weight, b u t t weight, different trimming. Hitting a specific SW doesn't necessarily mean the finished club will feel the same. Unfortunately, SW is still held as a fitting parameter even though it is ill fitted to graphite shafts.

Ah.  I am a visual person, and mostly work with taper/butt trim only.  👍

Yeah this is where my mind was going, agree OP should check logo progression as that would be extremely telling. If they in fact used the same shaft that would be like hardstepping an obscene amount. Thus the “harsh” feeling and loss of feeling in the handle would lead to this as well (from the extension)

We need to know how the club feels to YOU, before we can answer your question fully. Also grip has a lot to do with how the club feels. Take that into consideration.

The worst case scenario is, that the OP might have gotten charged for the shaft ... but that's where we need his feedback

I've done repairs like this before ... but never without being very transparent to the customer about that and charging accordingly (in situations like "need the club back in play for tomorrow" and I don't have a better alternative in stock)
