Inspired by the Ping Slam 88 thread and the special edition heads in a box Ping are offering (!), I remembered that during lockdown in 2020, I tried to work out all the major winning flatsticks.  I just found the document and brought this list up to date and am sharing it here.  All mistakes my own.

It goes back to 87, the year before the Ping Slam, partly because my own memories of watching golf only start around then, and partly because the info gets harder and harder to find.  I know Nicklaus won the 86 Masters with the famous oversixed Macregor Response, but couldn't quickly find Ray Floyd's winning putter at the 86 US Open.  Anyway, in case anyone's interested, here is the list I have come up with.  Faldo wrecked Ping's chances of 2 consecutive slams in 89, it seems...

Interesting .  Seems like Ping was the thing back in the day, but not a win since 2014.  Whole lot of Scottys and Odysseys lately.

I could have replaced most of the "Titleist Scotty Cameron Long Complicated Name" and quite a few other entries with "Ping Anser copy" or "Ping Anser 2 copy" but that seemed petty... Tiger's famous Scotty is nearly identical to the Anser 2 SS pat pend he used for his amateur career (and I believe also used O'Meara's backup Anser 2 in the 1998 Open which he lost by a shot).

The hackneyed old Ping/Scotty stuff aside, it is indeed ten long years since a Ping win - but maybe Hovland (or Hatton?) will change that soon.

You noted the Ping Slam back in '88 and TBH I'm surprised there was/has never been a Scotty slam for as popular as they are on tour, couple times they hit on 3 but never a clean sweep.

The golf gods have to keep things in check for Scotty every now and then.

Yeah, looks like Scotty Camerons have been 3/4 6 times.  Ping had 4 3/4s as well as the slam, but last time in 98.  2-2 draw between them in 2014; IIRC Kaymer's Anser 2 (2 majors total) was a basic, non-milled model retailing for about $100.

Interesting stuff. Is 2021 with Phil the last time we'll see a win on tour from the 8802?

It's one of the putters in my rotation, but you won't be seeing me on any tours any time soon 😛

But yes, that was kind of my point. Phil in 2021 may be the last win we see from an iconic putter style since I don't think there is anyone using the 8802 style or its related cousins on Tour.  I don't even recall seeing anyone with a Del Mar shape recently.

Yeah, I think Phil at Kiawah may well be the last 8802 blade-style win. Even in his generation they were a rare choice, and they have almost disappeared now. I still have the Wilson 8802 which I used as a teenager in the 90s and when I hit putts indoors with it now it reminds me how small the sweet spot is (on the OG at least).  It's a true "feel" putter and you have to be really confident to use it.

Rich Beam and the ole STX putter.  Hands down softest interest I ever rolled.  Cool list.

IIRC, Jesper Parnevik (who nearly won the 97 Open with it) and Seve also used the STX back in the day.

I will double-check tomorrow, but offhand i thought Nicky Price went Ray Cook, Zebra, Bobby Grace with his putters. Also I think Sir Nick is one of the few or only one to use two putters, he dropped his Bullseye to go to the Wilson.

Amusingly both that putter and Bernard's Scotty were borrowed from Ken Brown.

Thanks for this.  I knew but had forgotten that Faldo used the Bullseye in the 89 Masters (possibly even the first three rounds?) before moving to the TPA.  I think Irwin used two putters to win the 1990 USO but it's very rare for that to happen.

Stumped on Price so let me know what you find out.  That's a great fact on Ken Brown's loans!

It was the Ray Cook that Price used, not sure of the exact model I think it was an M1-X, I don't think it was the X3. The Bobby Grace was 1994's PGA win.

Thanks, I amended the list.  I knew he used the Zebra at Turnberry so I might have assumed when I was initially researching that he also used it in the PGA; can't remember now.  Strange that he changed putters within a month after winning the Open!  The Ray Cook is an outlier too.  I think that brand may have had a few wins in the 70s before my list starts; they seemed pretty old fashioned by the 90s?

(Parnevik I think came agonizingly close in that 94 Open with a Ping Pal 5KS, and a bag of Eye 2s - I was a huge fan of his so I remember that much)

* The 1967 British Open – won by Roberto Di Vicenzo

* The 1969 U.S. Open – won by Orville Moody

* The 1970 Masters – won by Billy Casper

* The 1970 and 1976 PGA Championship – won by Dave Stockton

* The 1992 PGA Championship – won by Nick Price

Not sure how successful Cook's were prior to 1992 and the 1976 PGA, they made some nice blade putters, Scotty Cameron had a hand in a few. The heel-shafted mallets were pretty common in the '70s. They racked up of 200 wins after their first in '63.

I know this is probably a long shot but if anyone out there knows the following info, please share it.  I'm looking for the details of the putters used by the following major winners:

Andy North - 1985 US Open (see pic...)

Hal Sutton - 1983 PGA

Bill Rogers - 1981 Open

My working assumption is that Nicklaus won both his 1980 majors with the George Low Wizard...
