Who's the best golfer you have played with?

I've played with some Canadian tour guys recently who went on to Q school the following week but didn't make it. I think what struck me most is how casual it was to them.

I coach a junior high team and at state finals last year, I had to ask a parent to stay on the cart path. He replied, "You don't need to tell me the rules, I've been on the PGA tour for 18 years. Turns out he was, and even has a win on tour, but he was sure uptight that day.

I was lucky enough to play in a pro-am with a Canadian tour player a few years ago. I was so impressed by how effortless his swing was and the level of consistency. It was a real treat watching and picking up tips during the round.

Played junior golf/on the same high school team with a current PGA Tour player, he has come back to town since moving away and being on tour and played with some of us a few times. His work ethic growing up was second to none, laser focus in any tournament even as kids, and he has been the best iron player I’ve played with since we were teenagers.

Hoge...

Played with I’d say several PAC10 guys in the NW who just made it look way too easy during junior tourneys or local US Open qualifiers. Walked with several tour players as a junior carrying the score board and had the luxury of walking with Vijay in 98 at the PGA Championship. Also walked with Els, Couples, Norman as a junior. The best though was being in a group with Tiger during his peak. The sounds of the ball piercing through the air is the thing that stands out for me.

it’s something I’ve only heard once playing non tournament golf and it was a coworker who absolutely was a ball striking machine.

It wasn't during a round, but a range session. I was next to Grace Na, one of our players on the Pepperdine Women's team and played later on the Epson Tour. She was bombing drives high into the net on the far end of the range. One of the pros walked by and said, "Grace, try to keep those in the range, please." I said, "Ted, why don't you ever say that to me?" 🙂

Played with Tommy 2 gloves Gainey at Hartsville County Club in 2013 when he was still on the big tour. I grinded out a 74, and he shot a completely stress free 68 while cutting up and joking the whole time. Like others have said, length, accuracy, and pinpoint short game. Misses were small and no big numbers. Every putt looked like it was going to fall.

Back in the day (maybe 15 years ago or so) I was playing a local track with a buddy on a windy day - Rustic Canyon in Moorpark, CA.  A single approached us as we were about to tee off and asked if he could join.  Sure we say!  He looked familiar, had a great effortless swing but I could not quite place him.  After hitting our first tee shots, the gentleman gets into his cart and drives up to his ball and as his cart passes I see the large TaylorMade leather golf bag with gold letters...Fred Funk.  Wonderfully nice man and even though I was a college player at the time - I was slapped in the face with the reality of why this guy makes money doing this and I had no chance at that life.  He proceeded to shoot 66 from the tips and apologized about a few errant tee shots since it was his first round back since breaking his finger after a 1 month layoff.  I remember being absolutely in awe at his ability, the shot-making, the putting and the ease at which he did it all.
