Help me decide on a Lob Wedge!

Hi all, I’ve shared my question before in other threads but find it tough to get direct answers. Figured I’d make a quick thread to help out until I decide! Here’s the run down… Purchased a set of sm10s in 50/12F, 56/14F and 60/12D. No issues on the gap or sand wedge as I’ve used them both before and they work for me.

My Lob Wedge is in question… I really only use it for specialty shots, short sided bunker shots, and mainly around greens. I’ve debated going M grind but know nothing about it. I am a bit steep so I don’t tend to get along with very low bounce. Also located in New Jersey. Would appreciate some input!

Best option, test various grinds out, preferably with a fitter.

If that's not possible, go with the M grind. It's okay at everything.

Concur. M grind is good for just about all of us mortals.

Thank you both. I know going and doing some testing is the play. But I end up not doing that and just purchasing and testing on my own.

M grind is the safe play for sure. It's pretty friendly all around.

I'm going to possibly disagree with other people... I think the M grind is a great all around option *unless* you tend to have soft conditions. I've found that, living in the mid-Atlantic (greater DC area), the conditions on the courses I play are soft more often than not and having the extra bounce of a D grind has been helpful. There's rarely been a shot that I've had to hit where I felt that the D was holding me back over the M that I used to use. If you're steep and often play in soft conditions, then that is a double whammy. So, fitting a stranger off of a couple sentences in a golf forum, I'd say stick with the D since the extra bit of bounce should be your friend and the heel and toe relief makes that wedge still really playable in all but the hardest conditions.

That being said, you could always pick up a used M from somewhere like 2nd Swing to see how it goes once you put it into play... maybe you're not as steep as you think or maybe your conditions are firm enough that the M works out. Or, maybe meet in the middle... get a 58 M and bend it 2* weak, making it a 60* with 10* of bounce.

Thanks for the reply! Obviously I should be going to get fitted. But I prefer to purchase and play around with it for a few weeks and decide based on conditions and normal use. I thought about either sticking with the D grind or doing what you said and getting the 58° M and bending it to 60°. I like the idea of the M grind.

Since the M and D are the same shape, it really comes down to whether or not that 4* of extra bounce on the D makes a difference in your game. And, like you said, testing on course is really the best way to know for sure how course conditions, technique, and bounce line up for you.
