Recent Bandon Dunes Course Conditions - Yikes...

Couldn't find a thread on this already, but if someone beat me to it, feel free to moderate/move this post however you see fit. I've been seeing a lot of concerning pics out of Bandon Dunes where the course conditions recently have been absolutely atrocious. Apparently they have been swamped by unprecedented rain recently, but still, to see these photos and the amount of advance planning it requires to book a stay and tee times there, this is pretty rough. I'd even go as far as saying unacceptable for Golf Digest Top 100 golf courses. There almost has to be some kind of element of agricultural mismanagement going on here, I've never seen greens look this bad from rain alone. Can any locals/folks who have played recently chime in? I'd really love to play there someday, but I don't know if I can stomach the cost if there's even a tiny chance that the courses are going to look anything like this. Photos from Reddit and Twitter. (Another link to a video of a green on Sheep Ranch)

Oddly enough, turfgrass doesn't grow well in standing water.  In fact, it can kill it.

Both masters leaders have been preparing on our club's greens in Dallas for the last 2 weeks, not some poa or fescue weed grass you call greens. But I have no idea what I am doing.

I really hope this isn't Neil Packard embarrassing himself like this.

Heard an interesting little update about the greens having trouble. Supposedly 2 of the greens that are struggling were reworked prior to the US Am at the request of USGA. I guess #2 they took out a bunker in front of the green that used to act as a drain for the green. When they took it out and reworked the green it has created a place for water to pool.

I thought that was interesting because a lot of people hoped the USGA never got their hands on Bandon. A friend was there this week and said Sheep is 100% better than Feb and OM is a little rough but that’s just because the Poa is finally taking over.

A little uncertainty about when you are going?  😁

I heard Bandon Dunes in particular is struggling, but others hopefully will be OK in a couple of weeks.  Maybe take BD off your schedule.

TM SIM2 3 hybrid

Disagree on BD. I visited 4/25-28. Yes there are some bad spots on BD on a few holes, but greens rolled well and were coming back. The 25% off they offered was a steal. Our group and caddie thought PD greens rolled worse, often bumpy and seemed thinner overall - and the worst hole on the par 3 #11 was worse than the worst #2 on BD. It was disappointing since last April, PD greens were so so good.

Old Mac greens were phenomenal. Trails was rolling slower since it was punched a week before we came but it was healthy and I assume will be mowed tight by a few weeks. Sheep Ranch greens were way better than last year and rolled pretty good.

Old Mac was "fine" - you clearly have no business commenting on greens; the OM greens were phenomenal - best they have ever been.

For the rest of the courses, there were some holes that were very bad; others that were so-so and some that were "fine".  Trails was pretty good considering the recent aeration.

I was there April 18-22nd and thought both Old Mac and Sheep Ranch greens were fine.  I know SR had issues in previous years but were quite good the day we played.  It was actually my favorite course.  PD rolled well also, but thinner.  Trails had been punched so hard to compare.  BD were poor in comparison with several unplayable (and ironically the pins placed in the worse sections!).

Damn, that sucks

We'd get 65 inches of rain a year between October and April; sometimes you can play, and sometimes you can't.

I remember once after a particularly massive storm, my brother and his friend went down and paddled a canoe around the course for a couple of hours. It had turned into a 30 acre lake.

I have family that lives south of Bandon and they’ve noted that the weather has been pretty horrible this winter / spring - I know the BD team will get the course back into shape as soon as possible. Also glad to see they are trying to make it right with guests.

If you think that's phenomenal.. we simply play different types of golf courses ..  thats cool...  fun course, fine greens and best of the lot...   hope it changes as I would like  to play the other 4 courses with better greens

I was going to say their greens have never been Phenomenal, they were good for a public resort and right now they are for the most part average to poor.

The discussion was about OM, not all the courses!  Reading is fundamental!

For the record, I am not comparing them to Augusta - and if you are trying to make that comparison - there is little help that can be provided.  I am speaking of the quality of greens in the area and Bandon.
