Intervening event or not?

I was asked following question.

 

Rick and James play together. Rick's ball lies on the fairway. Accidentally Rick moves his ball. James says to Rick that Rick has to replace his ball with one stroke penalty. Rick pays no attention to James's comment nor replaces his ball and when taking his 5-iron from his bag he accidentally moves his ball again. Then he makes a stroke at his ball. How many penalties Rick gets?

 

The core issue here seems to be whether those two accidental moves are separate acts with an intervening event between them (R1.3c(4))and cost one penalty stroke each but only the latter is combined with playing from wrong place thus resulting in 2+1 PS for Rick. Then again, Rick has only once moved his ball from it's original spot so any other movement is still related to that spot as well as the requirement of replacing the ball. Thus Rick gets only 2 PS for playing from wrong place.

 

Am I correct or have I missed something?

I would suggest it's a total of 2 penalty strokes.  A lot of things can happen between the initial accidental movement of the ball and its eventually being replaced at its original spot (or not).

I agree with 2 penalty strokes for the accidental movement and failure to replace..  After moving the ball for the first time, as he is obliged to replace his ball, the subsequent movement of the ball is irrelevant as it isn't a breach of a Rule.  He could, for example, have pulled it back with his club or kicked it over to roughly the right place  before lifting it and replacing.

It meets the definition of an IE, but the application of the Exception to the Rule means only general penalty anyway.
