More bounce or less bounce?

I’ve been on a bit of an equipment search the past few weeks.  I have a steep swing and have traditionally preferred irons and wedges with higher bounce and/or pre-worn leading edges. That said, I am living in my fourth state (currently Texas) in seven years and have experienced some new course conditions and have started rethinking my “preferences.”

I played a really nice course this past week. Conditions were immaculate, but I noticed the turf was very tight and the soil was firm. These conditions tend to be common in this area of Texas. While tinkering, I took out a set of irons that were very low bounce (for me) and they seemed to be really good.

is that the general rule - firm conditions/low bounce?  Should I be looking at low bounce wedges as well?

You need less bounce for sure! Texas is a place where steep swings go to die, I would get a lesson and work on making a better move so you don't end up struggling.

There is a reason you see companies off Texas grinds.

Might want to look into V Sole's for irons too.  Srixon, Hogan, Edison, Scor, etc

Titleist TSR3 - Hzrdus T1100 Hulk

Sub 70 949 Pro Hybrid 19 and 22* - Recoil Dart 95x

Srixon ZX7 - MMT's 105TX SSx1

Sub 70 JB Forged 48*, 52*, 56*, 60*- MMT Scoring

PXG Gen2 Mini Gunboat

I don’t wanna (great English there) disagree with y’all (keep the trend going).

But it is player specific.

In Colorado, on clay ground my favorite wedge was a 14 bounce F grind.

I move to Vegas…. Still great… Did hit my SCOR wedges then (V sole………. BTW).

I found that the whole V sole “can” work across a lot of playing surfaces.

FYI, I’m now in Florida.  V soles are in here now.

Not perfect but every course is different and the thing allow me to try things that I shouldn’t.

Low bounce is fine as long as irons have a blunt or "pre-worn" leading edge. If the leading edge is low and sharp, the bounce can be 0 or it can be 10-15 degrees and a steep/digger is still going to have problems on any sort of turf that's not pure hardpan. I say this as a life-long steep/digger who generally plays on tight fairways.
