Balance Point / Swingweight - need help with an estimation.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have heard that Steelfiber i110 makes a great overlength build as the shaft is both lighter and has a slightly higher balance point which aids the lighter swingweight feel.

Is anyone able to help me guess the approximate change in SW?

Currently play Srixon ZX7 MK2s with X100 shafts in and Lamkin Crossline midsize grips. SW comes in at D5. If I was to switch to Steelfiber i110 (assuming no length changes for now) what would the likely impact be on swingweight?

20g in shaft weight should take about 2 points off to get to D3. The higher balance point? Good for 1-2 points? Anyone have something a bit more scientific on how much?

Would either go lighter or add 0.25" to get the 3 points back.

You're on the right track but be careful of the bolded part, because that won't happen as a function of static weight alone. Swingweight is a very rough system designed to approximate a club's overall MOI (perceived "heft") and reducing shaft weight has an approximate effect on THAT approximate measurement, so it's very "napkin math".

Assuming a similar balance point between shafts, going up and down in weight doesn't change measured swingweight, only static weight. The old rule of thumb with shafts that "10g = 1sw point" is not meant to predict what it will measure, but a rough approximation of what it will "feel" like per the above. Take the vanilla Dynamic Gold shafts (130g) and their more modern 120g counterpart. They will swingweight the same, but the 120g shafted club will "feel" roughly like if the 130g shafted club had it's swingweight reduced by a point.

Otherwise i'd expect the Steelfiber shafts to drop 2-3 swingweight points off your current D5, so D2-D3, AND the fact that you're reducing the shaft weight by about 20g means there is a static weight drop that will be roughly equivalent to another 2sw points worth of MOI related "heft reduction". Overall this change will make the clubs feel noticeably lighter for sure. One small warning, keep an eye out for tip weights in the X100s if you do this, their presence and assumed absence when you install the Steelfibers is a variable you need to account for.

Based on my experience - DG to SFi110 (everything else the same) will drop about 3-4 swing weight points.

Forget the rule about how shaft weight effects swing weight, it's useless and completely meaningless.   It's only true if the balance point does not change and that is almost NEVER true with iron shafts.   it's just that the SF i110's don't change the balance point as much as most other shafts (including SF i95's).    The only way to answer the question of how the swing weight will change with an iron shaft change is to dry fit the new shaft and put it on a swing weight scale.
