What's this blue stuff mixed in with the epoxy?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So I am pulling wedge shafts to try the 8 iron spinner shaft trick and noticed this blue material inside the shaft. MG3 wedges ordered from TaylorMade. Is it a loctite type material? Also noticed the ferrules on the current shaft have the extra material to go inside the head. I ordered some from BB&F and they don't have that, which I knew. Will this affect anything?

Thanks for the help. Not my first time reshafting but don't remember a ferrule like that...but I could have just forgotten.

That is a sort of weird thing to see. I've re-shafted woods and irons (only for myself, don't do it for a living), but I don't think I've seen anything like that.

@ode is probably right. Something melted during extraction. But I don't get the blue color. Really wondering what it is.

Yeah I've only reshafted for myself and I've never seen anything like it. Just figured this would be the place to ask.

It shouldn't matter that I don't replace back with the collard ferrules correct?

It's more so a preventive measure on the mass production lines that companies like Callaway, Ping, and TaylorMade do. Nothing bad will happen if you don't replace it, as long as you don't over do the epoxy.

Yup that. Any epoxy that goes up the shaft and breaks off will rattle around which = likely warranty replacement + bad consumer vibes. If a tiny 2c plastic plug in the tip prevents that from happening then it's worth the effort.

Taylormade uses a blue plug in the end of the shaft to prevent epoxy from going up the shaft..not a big deal if you don’t use a plug. Also Taylormade use a collared ferrule for their irons, it’s helps center the shaft…also not necessary to use.

I've seen it hundreds of times. Always on OEM builds/pulls. Home builders and shop builders dont use them.

Callaway uses a white one on all their woods for example. I've seen blue and red as well.

Epoxy rattling is easily remedied by using a grip saver like this to open up the back of the grip: https://www.golfworks.com/the-golfworks-grip-saver/p/saver/ or you could also just save/redo the grip and spill it out the shaft with a v-groove tool: https://www.golfworks.com/the-golfworks-v-groove-grip-removers/p/vggr/
