Anybody play FW's under 20 degrees, hybrids over 20 degrees, then irons over 30 degrees?

As in 15* 3-wood, 18* 5-wood, 20* 3-hybrid, 24* 4-hybrid, 28* 5-hybrid, then 32* 6-iron? Or anything resembling that set make-up? I've been thinking about this and it seems pretty forgiving.

I think there's a significant number around here who are doing something along those lines in one form or another. I know I've seen some whose irons only start at 7.

A bag off the beaten path:

Driver: Turner H7 at 12 degrees, 43.5"

3W: Adams Speedline F11 (purchased used)

3UI: Adams Pro DHy

4UI: Turner 239

Irons: (5-PW): Dynacraft Prophet Muscle Blades

Wedges: (52, 56, 60): Ram Pro Spin

Putter: old Nitro putter with a DIY Blackburn Rovers paintjob

In the bullpen:  3H: System Golf Icon Plus (purchased used)

16.5° frankenwood (3W length)

29° 6 iron to 58° LW

Close to what you suggest. Works for me.

What head is on your frankenwood? My wife plays a 15 degree junior driver, but I sometimes wonder if another couple of degrees of loft might be good for her.

Cobra LTDx. Lofted up to get more air carry. Best setup I have ever had with FW.

What the heck is a frankenwood? New term to me. Then again, I'm old, and infirm. Is that something between a FW and Hybrid? (Never mind, I can use the Google thingy. 🤣)

For me it's the result of going crazy ordering random components at 3 A.M. (e.g. my recently assembled driver that is becoming my new best friend) 😂

Typically it is a higher lofted FW (4 or 5) played at 3W length. Low ball hitters get more height without reducing swing speed.

That kind of tinkering is right up my alley. I love all these ways that people can find what equipment attributes work for them.

Woods yes, 17.5 five wood.

Hybrids over 20, yes.

Six iron over 30? I would need to go back twenty years to my Ping G2 irons to get over 30.

I have driver, 15 & 19 fairway woods, 26 & 30 hybrids, 6 iron on down to lw.

Is there a massive yardage gap between the 19* wood and 26* hybrid?

I have an opposite setup with driver, 13.5 mini driver, and 2i-LW, so no true fw and no hybrid at all. Interesting how we all use such drastically different setups to achieve the same goal. Love the creativity.

No, I hit my hybrids fairly long. My 5 wood is about 210 to 220, my 26 hybrid is 190 to 200 and my 30 hybrid is my 175 to 185ish. I used to carry a 23 hybrid also but it went the same distance  as my 5 wood. The hybrid flew lower and rolled more and the 5 wood flies high with not much roll.

I also have 20* and a 23* hybrid and a 7 wood but the other clubs just seem to work better together. The other problem I'm running into is the 6 iron is becoming obsolete.  I'd rather hit an easy 30* (6 hybrid) than a 6 iron.

3W lofted to 17.5°, so sort of a 4W (mainly used of tee on long par 3s. Or 2nd shot on par 5s and long par 4s. It won't hold a green with my lower swing speed)

4h at 22°

5h at 26°

6h at 30°

7i at 29° (not greater than 30°, but your 6i must be a traditional lofted iron if it is 32°)

I just picked up some Cobra Air-X hybrids, 4h @ 21° and 5h @ 24°, to try out. If they work out, I may look at a 6h @ 27°.

What is your 6i distance? It helps us understand your swing speed.

Some version of this setup is what I think the VAST majority of golfers should be using.
