More tech/forgiving blade or same feel putter?

Brokensticks

Hello.

Putting is a huge PITA in my golfgame. Mostly distance control. Im looking for ideas and guidance.

Ive found that I like blade style putters with a plumbers neck like the Newport 2, but its a piece of steel and in CoolClubs test not very forgiving.

Ive tried some mallets, facebalanced Jailbird but I cant have bends on my shaft, it tricks my eyes and I push every put.

Ive tried a slant neck Spider but I dont like how much weight is in the back of the putter. It feels weird and I really have to focus on turning over the putter.

This gives me the option of ”same feel as Newport 2” but with some tech.

Ive looked at Ai-ones and Cobra, even the Grandspirt being abit bigger. The face looks very interesting.

Cobra Stingray 20 (plumberneck) felt good in the shop, didnt feel as heavy in the back as the Spider?

Spider FCG? This I find interesting as I get some extra aid in sightlines, pure roll insert and not as much weight in the back

Any pther suggestions where to look? I love the Scotty but I need to be honest about what it does to my speed control and plumber/crank hosel seems to be the only thing I can line up while actually putting.

Thanks

Mr. 38 putter

A bit confused... you mention right away that distance control is your problem then go on to mention alignment. For distance control, you would be better off doing drills on the putting green vs buying a new putter. If you are starting it on the correct line but just struggling with pace, that can be resolved by practice. If alignment is an issue, then maybe consider a fitting. Just not sure based on your post which is the overarching issue.

I think I have easier to align a blade putter and a better stroke with a Anser style plumber neck.

Maybe I can align other putters but unless the shaft is straight its messing with my stroke.

Mallet and slant neck is straight but then I feel like all the weight away from the shaft just feels weird.

I guess it lands on a Anser style but I would like some aid in the roll/strike department

So many options out there. I would go used or previous generation on something until you know what you want/need. I still think doing some distance drills would help more than a new putter if that is your main issue. Also, as mentioned above, there are lots of mallets now that are intended to feel more like a blade with more forward weighting. One of the benefits of a fitting is just having the opportunity to try out as many brands as possible and have them adjusted on the fly. Get a brand neutral fitting and just see what you like. Probably save you more money in the long run vs buying and selling putters.

Odyssey 7 CH, pick your flavor or vintage. Scotty NP2 is my baby and I love it, but my 7 blows it away. I don’t give a s*** what “CoolClubs” says about anything.

Get a putting mat, mirror, and lined balls. You will see for yourself. You’ll also find that putting every day, even if it’s a handful, pays dividends.

My friend, you quoted a gentleman who noted you started off with a "distance problem" and then went on to discuss all different putter types but nothing about distance.

You quoted him and then,,,,,,,, again said nothing about the distance. :classic_biggrin:

Anyway, *I* will assume you really are struggling with distance.

Here's a link to an old post of mine where I discuss a method taught to me about 30 years ago that I've used ever since. *I* find it works very well for me. YMMV.

Anyhow, whichever putter you decide on, perhaps my buddy's method will help, or at least give you some ideas, about distance control.

Good luck 👍

I’d look at putter weight, and shaft length for speed control. I’d also simply work on improving your skill.  I’ve made super high MOI blades and in the real world it doesn’t make a very measurable difference, great for marketing though.  Most important skill in distance control is controlling clubhead speed.  To miss a mid range putt because of poor contact you have to miss the sweetspot by around .6”, which is a LOT.  This is why putter weight and length is massively important and often over looked

Scotty Cameron Squareback 2, Bettinardi BB8 Wide, any Odyssey Double wide would fit the bill. All are mid mallets in the shape of a blade and can come in a plumbers neck.

I would recommend the Ai line or Tri-Hot line. You get the looks of a blade and the “forgiveness” of a mallet. Kind of the best of both worlds.

Slant Neck Toulon Las Vegas or Odyssey OG 7S both have adjustable weights towards the front of the club.  I have used both, and the give me similar feel and roll that I get with my Kingston KP1. I stick with the Las Vegas because of how consistent it is for me with forgiveness and distance control.

Like others, I don't see the stick being the problem here.

Blade style putters are generally going to be better for distance control and feel.

Mallet putters are generally going to be better for alignment and shorter putts.

Sounds to me that you are looking for a technical solution to a physical deficiency. Sorry to tell you, but it doesn't exist.

You need to get to the practice green more.
