How many of you guys use counter weights in your putter grip?

I'm thinking about adding some counter weight to my putter.

I've always struggled with the putter as I'm a 4 handicap but average 34.5 putts a round (over 13 rounds this year).... I know, I know, I :cheesy: suck at putting. :)

I'm looking for any advice I can get to see if adding the counter weights really does make a difference or just another gimick.

Thanks in advance guys

I have a 15 gram counterweight in my Yes marilyn, and it really helps with the tempo and feel of your stroke. I have a gauge design on the way, and will get a counterweight installed in the grip end, although I don't know which weight. :)

It really helps the feel and stability of the putter at impact. It also makes it very difficult to become wristy in the stroke, kinda like going left hand low. It's the best of both worlds for me without having to change the grip I am comfortable with :)

I agree with cree...

I've got 40 grams in my Yes Tracy 2 and it has really helped. My putter is much smother back and through and it seems to move the balance point under my hands, more. It may not be for everyone but well worth a try. I've tried different weights and just found one I'm comfortable with. Go with the TourLock.

Good luck.

I've been experimenting with it in my Black Series. It has the Balance-Certified number 11 weight. It's pretty heavy. I wasn't sure about it at all at first. Video shows me that my stroke is a bit smoother with it, less prone to wavering off a smooth path, but I don't see that it's had much, if any, result as far as reducing putts per round.

My analysis so far is that it might help, it might not, but after you get used to the weight it doesn't hurt.

the only problem I had with adding weight to my putter was that at first it was great, smooth stroke...everything slowed down. But eventually you get used to it and need more. By the end of the season I've got a 5 pound putter and it's back to square one. I'd try just getting used to your putter as is, and the mechanics of your stroke.

I've worked countless hours on my stroke at the putting green. I've tried every grip and grip style known to mankind and used just about every type / brand of putter out there.

It seems like I have more problem with distance control vs accuracy. Had a great round going last week heading into #14 just 1 OP, hit an iron too long into the green and had a horrible down hill putt. Left it short, next putt rolled off the green. Missed next putt coming back before finally tapping in for a double bogey. Next hole, hit my iron and again, wrong plateau of the green and a 3 putt. Same happened on 18. From 20 feet in or so, I'm fairly decent, but my distance control outside that is just horrible.

I've tried the super-stroke and it works well on shorter putts for me, but it burns me on long putts.

Three 3 putts and one 4-putt took my total putts from around 31 up to 35 in a hurry last week. Still shot 76 but it could have been much better minus the 3 putts... and on the golf course, nothing pisses me off more than a :) 3-putt.

"other than heavier what do you think counter weighting does?"

Butt-weighting, essentially modifies the balance point of the putter's shaft (effectively lowering it) and tends to have its best application w/ heavier putter heads [350 grams +]. The heavier the putter head, relative to the overall putter, the less prone the head is to twisting and releasing......... and the greater the putter's inherent lag. By butt-weighting a putter, one can cause putters with heavier heads to release through the stroke in a more unified manner, what most would call smoothing out the stroke.

Seldom is it a good idea to butt-weight a lighter putter, as it usually tends to rush the head through impact...... and provides little, if any, feedback on either distance or direction.

I have since the 90's. Will never go back the other way again. I'm used to that extra weight -- nothing else feels right now.

Using the 25 gram on the tour 2.0 which is a pretty light grip at 55 grams.

I have a 25g counter weight in my PXG Closer

I put it there because the weight of the original Lamikin Sink Fit grip the putter came with was heavy and the SS Pistol 2.0 I went to is lighter, so I was trying to match the original weight of the putter.

Started at 50g and went to 25g and found the sweet spot.

As with any other club you try, it is all trial and error

Mostly error for me

I switched to a super stroke 5.0 and found the counterweighting to be a lot more difficult to deal with than expected.  For me it was tough to judge distance control without feeling the head as much.  It could be a different feel if you add a weight to your normal grip instead of bumping up the size and weight at the same time
