we've talked alot about tour players using rangefinders to help them during practice round, but does tiger use a rangefinder or gps and does anyone know which model?

The information that I know is, that Tiger and Steve have played all the courses that he plays each year so often, they have the book down on those. As for new venues such as the majors if it's a new one. Typically Steve does it on their pre tournament trips that they make for a practice round if he's with Tiger, if he's not then he does it very early in the week. This part is only a guess, but I woud guess he (williams not woods) uses the Busnell 1500, seems to be the device of choice among most of the caddies.

Yeah, if Steve does it, it's probably early morning Monday when no one's out. For all the practice round pics I've seen, there hasn't been a rangefinder strapped on to the bag like everyone else. Even all the other big name players such as Els and Scott have them on their bag but not Tiger. I think Tiger fully trusts Steve and lets him take care of all the specifics. Tiger plays more on feel. I do know that when Tiger came to Medinah in 2006 for an early look the Monday after the Buick in Michigan, the assistant pro was caddying for him and he was using a rangefinder. Tiger probably wanted to use it because of the added length, but I'd say he knows his way around Medinah pretty well.

Tiger plays on feel because he already knows the exact yardage from Steve. I dont know how they get thier yardages but when you hear them on TV. Steve tells him how much the yardage is and then how much he thinks he should play the shot.

Steve takes the Private Jet (a week before Tiger) ... Do a little Recon ... Mark the #'s (distance, wind direction, slope of greens, etc)

in the Yardage Book ... Seal the Yardage Book (Top Secret) ... Meet up Tiger (review Yardage Book) ... During Practice Rounds

they make the Modifications and on Thurs (It's Game Time)

I hear Tiger's has a special custom model that has batteries that last three times as long, has a "TW" engraved on it, and has tighter tolerances and more accurate measurements over the standard version. His rangefinder can go up to 4 decimal places in the yardage measurements, and can measure in inches and millimeters. Tiger paid for this technology and the licensing rights to use it until he is in the senior tour, so it will never be released to the public.

I heard it was just a restamped Mizuno model..

I just rang Stevie, i asked him what he uses to measure yardages... He asked me what a yardage was?

He said he sees every hole in Matrix vision and sends Tiger the link on every tee... He got the idea off of Neo apperently when Tiger and Morpheus were hanging out in the Matrix a couple of years back... Neo gave Stevie the download, Tiger becomes "the one"...

Tiger had tour-only laser eye surgery. which is not available to the general public. It is more accurate and lets him see the holes in grids, just like in a computer game.

...and that hip speed he has... wears special underwear not available to the public that enhances his ability.... not to mention his socks which are custom made to integrate with his shoes, allowing his feet to sense the exact angle of the lie he has, and not to mention, his shafts come from the planet Remulak, which if we played them would magically make us all +10 player - regardless of our current handicap...

Really now. How far does the "what does he use" go before it becomes, well, simply - I don't have a word for it. Yeah, pros sell product. But I know that there's nothing but hard work to improve my game. I recall when I was taking lessons, how the pro could pick up a club, mine or the bud I was taking lessons with - very different mind you - and proceed to it phenomenal shots. Point: its you ability, not what you use....

This is a bit of a rant, but I had to comment after seeing so many similar posts/topics.... I wonder who agrees.... If I offended anyone, I apologize - I'm a club addict myself....

This is a funny thread but seriously...

Last year before the US Open Tiger was up at Oakmont with Hank Haney and he had the Bushnell. A good friend of mine has a job at Oakmont and he told me this story.

Tiger and Hank were leaving Oakmont after a practice round a couple weeks before the tournament and before they left the club they couldn't find the Bushnell. Hank says "Tiger wheres the Bushnell?" Tiger says "I thought you had it" Hank then said "No, you definitely had it." Tiger's response, "Great, you always have to blame it on the black guy for losing it."

I have no idea what happened to the Bushnell, but that's just the story I heard from a guy.

Yeah, the Pros use laser rangefinders as the GPS standard golf offerings are only accurate depending on geography to 2m which would make a BIG difference to a Pro although I've read the SkyCaddie SG5 is the only GPS positioner to offer submeter accuracy. Not sure if anybody has experienced that in real life situations

Yes, Tiger uses a Bushnell.

Woods himself has used a Bushnell during the Tavistock Cup, an unofficial event.

"Tiger has long been a user of Bushnell rangefinders, all the way back to his college days," O'Loughlin said. "He just doesn't want to make it easier for the other guys to catch him. I don't really think he needs to worry about that."

According to O'Loughlin, the evidence is indisputable that rangefinders help speed up play. He said when Woods hit a wild drive on the 17th hole in the final round of the 2005 Masters, it took his caddie, Steve Williams, more than 2 minutes to pace off the yardage.

A rangefinder would have given Williams the exact yardage in seconds.

One of the guys at my club is an engineer and used to work in satellite technology in the military. He has a skycaddie and said the accuracy is 3 meters, and that's the best they can get out of civilian equipment. The only way to improve would be by switching networks (I doubt the military would let us do that).

Just a question on this,

If they are doing pre-tournament measurements or practice round measurements, can they use the slope version??

I would think on the hilly courses that pre-round knowledge would really help.

They can and do. Matter of fact since they can't use them in tournament play anyway, many of the caddies own the slope edition.
