Just to throw a very small spanner in the works, I'm not sure that Faldo was carrying a metal spoon during his second Masters win in 1990. If memory serves, he had a persimmon 3-wood in the bag that year.

Interesting info Mat, I will have to dig out the old VHS tape of the 1990 US Masters to see whether this was the fact...............problem is though, apart from not having a VHS player I also don't recall many holes round there where a fairway wood would of even been used !?lol

Hi Freddie, hope all is well mate !?

Would Faldo's M85W Persimmon Driver have been identical to all the images posted above including the crown markings !?

Cheers.

I bet Faldo hit a spoon of the tee on 18th all 4 rounds 1990 =).

Gatchet,
I'm not sure if Sir Nick's M85 had the winged MT on the crown like the one in the Pic or the stampings in the toe, but I'm pretty sure they were there. It most likely did, atleast originally it did. I know his was an original from the 50s like mine pictured. I would think the stampings were all there, possible a little faded, but not sure. I think the face shape of his M85 was a little less "long" as the one pictured, but I'm talking a very small amt. M85 head shapes varied from head to head. The one pictured I was told from a Tour Club maker was definitely a "tour quality" head.

edit: The pics I've seen of Nick's M85 I do remember seeing the sight of a winged MT on the top as well as the toe stamp.. so I would say his was very close to the one I posted. I would think his eye o matic insert might have been replaced at some point through the years by his master club repair guy in the UK as was Ben Crenshaw's.

Played Troon Lochgreen today and ball striking was much improved as I have spent the last two weeks watching my Faldo VHS instruction vids. He is actually really consistent with his advice including from Nick Faldo's Golf Course volumes 1 & 2, the faults n fixes, tips & drills & shotsavers 3 part series, Swing For Life book and right up to this months Golf International magazine which he is on the cover of with a instruction feature.
Made me realise how you have to stick to a theme. Ordered the Faldo Formula book to complete the collection. Now if only my collection had the TN 87's and the Faldo Stamped TP 19's I'd be less of a part timer ;)
The Mac persimmon Did have the stampings, I've checked some pics.
Off to check the 90's Masters and the metal 3 rings a bell...
P.S. thanks for the inspiration to this post and the posters. Loving the Faldo nostalgia and I played like I used to today thanks to it all being re-kindled.

18th tee, last round, mate. That's the shot I'm thinking of. I'm sure it was with timber, and it wasn't the big stick.

What course is this?

This was in fact The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at St. Mellion in 1992 where Faldo came third and is certainly a course that I just need to get round to playing in 2012 !!!

I know Mat has been lucky enough to play it a fair few times so he should be able to enlighten us on which hole number this is...............sure looks like a nice one !

I really want to play it. I've worked for the company who own it nearly five years and have still never taken the drive down there :(

Some interesting thoughts from faldo on equipment in this month's golf international. I'll try and scan it in tomorrow

My parents actually vacation there every now and again (their friends have a timeshare), they said the area is really nice, I need to tag along one of these days and play it, I have been invited a few times and always kind of blew it off, looks like I have been missing out!

I must say it would be awfully strange to play a course in the UK with a "buggy" though, I have never done that in all the golf I have played over there.

Oops. Only just spotted the photo, as it wasn't loading up due to a glitch in my browser or something.

Yes, I have spent many happy days up (as it was at the time, as I was based down in Helston when I was playing there regularly) at St Mellion. The Nicklaus Course is a fantastic track, in my top 5 of courses I've played. Now that it's matured a bit, it's even better, and it's an absolutely fantastic knock on a summer's day with a light breeze blowing.

That photo looks like the back tee at the par five 12th, to me.

I always found it intriguing that guys from that era would put woods into play that could be as much as 3 decades old. There was certainly more "art" involved in the equation back then

I reckon you are bang-on as usual Mat ! Cheers mate !!! :)

"And the 12th hole is a long par five that funnels down a pine forest avenue, before playing an approach over water - no replica of the classic 13th at Augusta, but with a pleasingly similarity."

Gatchet, the pics you've posted of Faldo are just excellent!! Love it. One of the only times I got close to Sir Nick was in the early 90s (he had the t zoids in the bag), he was walking off the 17 green at Doral (Miami, Florida). He had just made a 15 foot birdie putt and he was walking right at my twin bro and I. We said "great putt Nick". He looked at us and gave us a big "Thank Yoooooooooooooooooooooo" in is great Nick accent. He then proceeded to step up on 18 and hit a low rope slight pull up the left side that almost found water, he wasn't pleased with the shot, but it was safe. He was hitting the TZoid driver then. Nick for years during his prime was somebody I admired (still do) for his great style and awesome swing. IMHO one of the greatest swings of them all.
