What makes the TN-87s special for you? Grind? Look? Feel? I know if I see someone with TN and asks me to play some skins, I generally run away. (cool)

I have hit a freind's. He even has the gap wedge, courtesy of Mr. Kwok.

They are soft and actually quite forgiving.

For me they came out at the right time, when the US market was now becoming aware of Japanese products and these were the pinnacle of a Japanese product when they came out. These were the first "showcase/signature" irons of Mizuno to come out in a long time.

Because of the buzz created by the timing, these exceptional irons have created a mystique that will never be surpassed even by the 681Ts.

that gap is really nice.. interesting grind on it..all the gaps have that grind and it's very useful... the sandwedge on the other hand is typical of that era (I hate it)..

I would love to too JHR..but it's my last set and I told myself I cant sell them. I was not known as JohnnyTN87 on a bunch of forums before without a reason. (cool)

I have been playing a set of TN's for almost 2 years now...

I had played 14's for a couple of years prior to that...

The first day I had them I went to the range and hit them and I was like "well these are ok...nothing too special."

I then tossed the 7 iron aside and picked up my 14 7 iron. I hit two shots, both pure and I vowed never to hit the 14s again. The 87s were that PURE. I just didnt realize it until I compared them on back to back swings. I couldnt believe how big of a difference there was.

If you like blades there is nothing, I repeat nothing like them.

I have an extra set too that guys have been trying to get me to sell for the past six weeks...nobody wants to offer what this hard to find set is worth....oh well that just means another set for me!

didnt these have some sort of copper underlay?

Copper underlay for sure....they look and feel 'thicker' and softer as a result of the unique finishing process. I lucked out and found a set in mint condition 2 years ago. I have tried different Mizuno blades of late to see of anything comes close in feel (MP-37 satin JPGA, MP-37 matte black, MP-29's and 14's) and the 87's are still tops....

Interestingly I had a set of 29's rechromed by Iron Factory 3 years ago when they were still underlaying their "Tour Chrome" finish in copper. The 29's feel every bit as good as the 87's, so there's no doubt in my mind the copper underlay is the reason.

Do these look like the MP-37?

Go back farther...they look like the Ben Hogan Precision and Starburst from the late 1950s.

Saw my frineds set of TN-87s and hled them close etc. Irons look very sharp and very player-like except for the amount of offset - way too much IMHO. Irons feel great prob becos of copper underlay?

TN - stands for Tommy Nakajima, and 87 represents his score prob at some tournament.

there is a tad of offset.. not too much..

87 is the year, but the score could have some merit as well. (cool)

During that time, he was a #1 player in JPGA!

87 is more like our score!

aren't the tn87's identical in looks to the mp29's???

They are very similar. My TN-87's are about the same length heel to toe, but are a little wider in the face. The backpad muscle contour is very similar to the 29's. The 87's look a little thicker on the top line also (must be all that copper underneath!).

The set that I had also appeared to have less offset than the 29's especially in the shorter irons. Man, what a great set of blades they were. Still not sure what I was thinking when I got rid of them (cool) .

Careful you don't impale yourself on the toe.........

My only criticism of Mizuno irons is the consistent design of the rounded lower toe progressing up to a sharp pointed upper toe. Just does not look good to my. Unbelievable feel in the Mizuno irons, just never got used to that look. Some people prefer that look though, so it's all individual taste. They are obviously successful on tour.
