BMW builds the Z4 and X5 in Spartanburg SC. The 3-series comes in from South Africa, last i knew. M-sport engines are still built in Bayerische.

Mercedes builds the M class in Alabama. Pretty sure they're sedans are still made in Stuttgart.

It makes sense for these guys to build their SUVs in the states, it's the biggest market.

After considering the options I found that Audi's give the most bang for the buck. My first was a 01 S4 (2.7L twin-turbo), then a 2003 TT 180, and now the 04 S4. For a while I thought that Mercedeze was over priced hype, but the new stuff they have coming out is very nice but still a little over priced if you ask me.

I have WAAAAAY too many cars....at present I don't own any Euro rides, but here's the '97 SL600 that I sold last summer.

I bought it as a theft recovery at an insurance auction for the purpose of fixing it & selling 'er off for hopefully a tidy profit......V-12, triple black, almost kept it.

It was fast.... :D

I like BMW's and Audi's, but the maintenance costs on them are killer. I have a friend who has an '02 Audi A4 with the 4.8L V-8. It's a great-looking car and runs like a raped ape...but it also costs $90 for an oil change and over $300 for a brake job. And it seems to be in the shop for work once every three months.

I stick with Japanese cars, they're more reliable and hold their value better. But the Bimmers sure look nice!

Very, very, nice. Rolling in style. The interior is spectacular.

Has it been reliable? I know Jags of years past had some serious issues.

Actually, she's been very reliable. Don't take her to the shop except for routine maintenance. Ever since Ford bought them in '91 ('92?) they've been very reliable. You don't want to get anything older than a '94 if you do decide to get one. Also don't bother with '95; they tried to go back to some of the original styling and started having problems with the a/c, water pump, power steering rack, and crankshift sensor. I bought the last year of the low roof and sleek styling. Unfortunately, when the raised the roof in '97, it lost it's original "low-profile" look that was distinguishingly Jaguar. They look cheap to me now, too much like the all the other cars on the road. That's the only reason I haven't upgraded yet.

Oil changes can be done by anyone for around $40 and scheduled maintenance it free. Upkeep has been pretty decent on my Audi's.

It's free if you buy it new. It's not free if you buy it two years old, like my buddy did. I don't know where you're getting your oil changed, but I wouldn't go back there. The filter alone on his V-8 A6 costs $67, you can only use an OEM filter. So it's $90 every time he gets an oil change.

I've found Mercedes to be no more difficult to wrench on than domestic stuff. They have some quirks but in all actuality Mercedes and BMW are pretty user-friendly.

But I do agree it takes some serious tools & equipment to be a DIY'er on European machines. My Snap-on man's wife loves me. LOL

I do my own work on all my cars. Therefore, I will never own a German car (Audi, BMW, VW), as they manufacturers make it a PITA for anyone outside of the dealer to work on it and even then they rape you.

I drive a Subaru which right now is a M3 killer. :)

My other car is a Rx-8

I'll drive my Chevy Avalanche over a full import.

Every car is a import to some extent now days.

Like to see a fancy beemer or jag go where i go during the fall and winter :D :) :cheesy: :miz:

I hear you! We got two feet of snow on Saturday-Sunday and my Pathfinder was plowed in. There was a wall of snow 4' high, I had to get in on the passenger side. But I didn't have to shovel myself out, I just flipped it into 4wd High and busted my way out. Took all of five minutes.

I live in a very hilly area, and it was pretty scary watching people in their Bimmers try to make it through 4" of packed snow with rear-wheel-drive.

Not too bad to drive actually. The car is heavy for a 2 seater convertible, over 4100 pounds. The V-12 is a 6.0L, and advertised at 389hp.

My race car weighs less than 1/2 of that and has almost twice the horsepower, so, not to brag, but no it didn't scare me. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Like all the work on my car, I get it done at my local Audi dealer. OEM filters are not required for oil changes on Audi's (and will not void warranty) and the cost is always around $40-$50 for a complete change. Also, scheduled maintenance is free even on used Audi's as long as they haven't exceeded the mileage requirements. They usually take place every 10,000 miles up to 100,000 miles. tell your buddy he should read his owners manuals and that he's getting ripped off.

I'm waiting to win a lottery. Can you hold one for me?

LOL! :idhitit: Don't tease me like that ok! :cheesy:

I'm just glad that my ride is still running. :bb2:

Oh come on Joe you can afford it, the monthly payment is only about $10,000 a month ;)
