Oems and grip alignment

anybody put them on straight?
A few years ago a low handicap golfer accused me of putting acouple of grips on with the alignments slightly to the right maybe about the 2nd groove.

Since then I ve looked at every club ive seen in shops people's bags etc andI must say that very few are aligned correctly.Callways,Mizuno and Nike included.

I played behind a guy yesterday who has them custom made by Nike.Longer more upright with midsize grips but the grips were on at least 5 degrees out and not even straight, kind of ok at the top and getting worse as they go down the grip/.

So anyone apart from Good Custom clubmakers put grips on straight?

I have seen a video of the Ping factory where they put each club in a clamp and align the grip with a laser.

I know Scotty Cameron's guys do the same thing on the putters as I have seen pictures.

They still miss. I have seen Cameron putters (and Ping's) with crooked grips.

Manufacturers install countless grips, no way they get them all on straight.

My Taylormade driver had a Tour Velvet on logo down and that thing was installed about 25-30 degrees crooked.

Funny thing is it took me about 3 months to notice.

I have started switching to GP Tour Velvet Cords on my clubs and install them logo down, and just eyeball the logo to be straight. I'm not too worried about it.

As far as putter grips go, everybody grips the putter differently. What looks and feels straight to you is going to look and feel crooked to me.

Im sure the top clubmakers like Dana ,Joe etc would disagree.

Grip alignment is just one area of club assembly that shows the difference between cut and glue guys and proper clubmakers.

Like not turning down ferrules, having the odd club 1/8 inch out and swingweighting. +- 3 points

None of these would make a big difference to the average player .

But a quality clubmaker wouldnt allow it at all.

Absolutely agree. And almost nobody puts grips on correctly, OEMs or otherwise. The correct way to do it is put the club in the rubber vise protector in line with a horizontal line of some kind, so you can do a plumb-bob type picture to keep the club vertical and perpendicular to your horizontal line. Then install the grip with plenty of solvent and tape so you can maneuver it until it's perfect. I think solvent and tape is still the best way to go. I've seen too many blow-on grips misaligned or inconsistent within the grip.

Hey guys - I have always used Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips installed logo down so I couldn't mess anything up. I've always installed my own grips, so I didn't want to mess with trying to get the lettering and face aligned b/c if they were slightly off, I guess it would just make me uncomfortable.

I've been thinking about trying out the GP Decade Multicompound, but by the way they look, you have to install them logo up. First off, is that true about the logo on these needing to be installed up?

If it is, I was thinking about putting the club in the vice and then using a level to get the face exactly perpendicular to the ground and then putting the grip on there with the logo right on top.

I figure this should lead to having the grip properly aligned with a square clubface. Does this make sense, and will it be accurate?

If the GP Decade MCs don't need to be installed logo up, I won't have much of an issue...thoughts??

Like Dr Pino said unless they are ribbed it doesn't matter.

The idea you have should work, I don't use a level or anything, but I do get the club face square, with the toe pointing up in a vice and then slide the grip on. Make sure you really soak the tape to be able to adjust the grip though. What I like to do though afterwards is quickly take the club out of the vice and hold it like I am addressing a ball and then see if it needs any more adjustment. Sometimes what is truly square, may not look square to your eye exactly or line up with your hands when you grip the club etc.
