hope you enjoyed your socal golf so far. In case you're unfamiliar with Golfnow.com it offers some good rates for Robinson Ranch, Lost Canyons, and Tierra Rejada. I believe Brookside #1 is on the site as well.

Have fun and keep us posted on which courses you liked!

thats were i got my tee time yesterdat at robinson ranch for $46 and they let me go out solo so i played 2 balls since no group behind ;)

so far the best course i've played so far in socal is shadow course at lost canyons. In norcal, i played metropolitan and callippe, both are great courses. metropolitan is a links style course and its so much easier for my style. i have schedule to play eaglevine in norcal sometime early next year and i've heard great things about it too.

I'm from Florida so I'm not sure what "southern California" is, but duirng my recent trip to California I played a super military course that is open to public play and very reasonable priced.

Marshalla Ranch at Vandenberg Air Force Base is a must play - after your round take in a steak, or halibut at the Hitchin Post in Casmalia, a few miles north of the course. Entire day, golf, cart, and meal under $75

Oak Valley is one of the best public courses ive ever played its early Pete Dye course. And dont forget some of the Palm Spring courses like Dessert Willow they have two good courses there thats were they do southern california high school CIF. And if you ever get a chance there is Crystal Air Country Club. I know a lot of non members that can get on there not sure how. Goose Creek is always in great shape its a must if you can there 18 hole is a great golf hole. La Purisima is really nice Ojia is a great week end retreat. Those are my top courses that most people can get on to. I think all these are in your price range.

Played the Firecliff course in early December and was disappointed with how it had grown in. There were trees that were so overgrown that they eliminated one side of an entire tee box from being played. Not good. One par 3 had bushes that were growing in between the green and tee box that were so big that you couldn't see the surface of the green. Definitely not good. Very disappointed with that course.

ok so i played valley course and from my experience i didn't felt it harder than mountain course were on the later i lost 6 balls and only 3 on the former. the fairways on the mountain course are more narrower not too much room to work with when you miss the fairway. tierra rejada, wow this course have probably 3-4 beautiful holes overlooking the valley and have some 2-3 hundred or more foot drop tee shots. this course is easier than both robinson ranch courses though. the front nine are the tougher holes and back nine are so much easier. i only lost 2 balls on this course but supposedly just one ;) i got tempted on one of the hundred somthing foot drop on a tee shot on a par 4 to go after it and paid the price instead of laying up with a 6iron lol. overall, if this course is closer to my location this would be my pick but if i want more challenge to test my skills even better robinson ranch will be the answer.

Played Goose Creek this past weekend,

If it wasnt for the damn wind it would have been even better, but regardless liked the course except it gave me a bit of a empty feeling. No cart girl, empty bar/club house but other than that i'll be there again pretty soon.

Im also going to be trying more courses on this list. Good topic by the way.

Steele Canyon is by far my numero uno. Well there IS Torrey Pines South but I don't feel like waiting another 2 hours on the waiting list. Steele Canyon though is a definite players course, constructed by none other than Gary Player. Its a little pricey (over 100 for the weekend) but if will test all the aspects of your game. Just make sure you can play Canyon and Ranch for it though.

I played Sky at Lost Canyons last weekend...very nice course. I thought the fairways were a little patchy though. I'm gonna check out Rustic Canyon tomorrow.

Played Rustic Canyon today. Great track for $60! A far better value than Lost Canyons. The greens were insanely fast though...not a course for a slasher...it beat me up pretty good and I play to an 11.
The Grand Del Mar ... Tom Fazio course.

On the pricey side but you get what you pay for both from the course, the staff, and the full experience. You will be treated to almost any drink you can imagine on ice at each hole, plus snacks every few holes, etc.

You arrive, through gated community with gate guard ... just tell him you have a tee time. You will be valet parked, clubs unloaded for you and placed on their custom carts with velour seats, GPS and laser range finders in each cart.

The driving range has pyramids of fresh Titleist ProV1s ready for you to prepare for your amazing round.

The course is incredible. Very few players so no rush; conversely you will never be held up by slow play.

The holes are very memorable, challenging in length and shot types as well as conditioning. Terrific greens.

The resort is simply the most amazing in SoCal. Rooms start at around $450/night, but you can also rent villas. The infinity pool, the clubhouse, and other amenities are breathtaking.

You won't find a more complete experience ... but comes at the cost of around $235 weekdays and $250 weekends with a replay rate of $85 (a bargain).

You will see a few houses (all worth millions), but mostly you will feel like you are playing in the wilderness. Very well laid out course with multiple tees to challenge and reward players of varying skills.

You'd love it.
It's not worth that kind of greens fees.

The Ranch in Moreno Valley formerly named Moreno Valley Ranch it used to host the Nike Tour in the mid 1990's. There is 27 holes of Pete Dye design. The course has nice fairways and green, but it is a little rough around the edges. Green Fees include carts
Monday-Sunday $65
Senior rate excluding saturday $35
Super Twilight i believe is $30 on weekends and $25 during the week and it starts at 3pm. The course is wide open in the mornings before 8am and you can play under 3 hours if you like to play quick. It is a diamond in the dirt.

Journey at Pechanga

I'd second this one ... in Temecula (can see it from my house).

$75 after 2pm weekdays, $100 after 2pm weekends - easily get in 18 memorable holes.

I'd also check out Champions Club at the Retreat (Corona, CA) - through GolfNow - Nicklaus course for a song.

In the Desert, I'd look at:
Desert Willow - Firecliff
SilverRock
PGA West Stadium Course

In San Diego:
The Grand Del Mar
Torey Pines South Course (if only for the views)

Another vote for Steele Canyon. We played the Ranch and Meadow courses. Ranch #3 is incredible. The elevated tee must be about 200 yds above the fairway. Your tee shot seems to stay in the air for 30 seconds. The Canyon is supposed to be the most challenging of the 3 but you can't go wrong with any of them. If you're not a low handicapper bring plenty of balls.
