i'm compiling a list of first class public courses in southern cali that i'll be playing. here's what i've got so far. i already played shadow course at lost canyons and its a beauty. you'll be playing lots of uphill holes there. im schedule to play sky course at lost canyons and both courses at robinsons ranch or angeles national in a couple of weeks.

Redhawk.. its $55 on the weekend w/ a cart! Island green.. one of the funnest courses around.

Industry Hills...Eisenhower course. Pricey, but that's a killer golf course.

Oak Valley...2nd stage Q-School every year.

Rustic Canyon...When it debuted, it got Golf Digest's #1 Best New Public course.

La Purisma... Golf as pure as it gets. Unbelievable place.

Brookside No. 1...nothing fancy, but it will test your game.

Oak Quarry...lots of eye candy, conditions hit/miss. People drive from all over to play here.

Barona Creek...Nice,but a long a** drive to get there.

East Valley Golf Club...across the street from Oak Valley..both the Champions and Legends courses are stellar.

If you're going to be in Murrieta, try the SCGA course.

The Grand Del Mar ... Tom Fazio course.

 

On the pricey side but you get what you pay for both from the course, the staff, and the full experience. You will be treated to almost any drink you can imagine on ice at each hole, plus snacks every few holes, etc.

 

You arrive, through gated community with gate guard ... just tell him you have a tee time. You will be valet parked, clubs unloaded for you and placed on their custom carts with velour seats, GPS and laser range finders in each cart.

 

The driving range has pyramids of fresh Titleist ProV1s ready for you to prepare for your amazing round.

 

The course is incredible. Very few players so no rush; conversely you will never be held up by slow play.

 

The holes are very memorable, challenging in length and shot types as well as conditioning. Terrific greens.

 

The resort is simply the most amazing in SoCal. Rooms start at around $450/night, but you can also rent villas. The infinity pool, the clubhouse, and other amenities are breathtaking.

 

You won't find a more complete experience ... but comes at the cost of around $235 weekdays and $250 weekends with a replay rate of $85 (a bargain).

 

You will see a few houses (all worth millions), but mostly you will feel like you are playing in the wilderness. Very well laid out course with multiple tees to challenge and reward players of varying skills.

 

You'd love it.

On the other end of the cost scale but still a great course both for playability and history (course Tiger Woods grew up playing on) is the Navy Golf Course in Cypress.

Water on 13 holes ... great greens ... decent length ... not the Grand Del Mar, but well worth a play!

i played mountain course at robinson ranch today and lost 6 balls LOL. tough course for me fairways are too narrow for me and only about 6 feet of rough on side of the fairway beyond that consider the ball lost/OB. i played blue tees and scored 92. my one week vacation is coming up next week and im planning to play valley course(robinson ranch), sky course(lost canyons) and angeles national and maybe tierra rejada :)
