This actually happened in our group during yesterdays round

You hit and your ball lies on the green in regulation. You one putt for par. How does this happen?

Putt the ball off the green and either putt or chip in from the fringe. I've done it before.

Lefty wins. We were playing on bent grass greens yesterday in brutal winds. My partner putted the ball and if went a foot off the green. He chipped in his come backer for par.

 

Ive played for years and that was a first for me seeing that

Actually, it is possible to par with one putt if it hangs over the hole and the player waits over ten seconds then it falls in. The player is deemed to have holed with his last stroke and he also incurs a one stroke penalty. :D Rule 16-2

Here a couple for ya:

Player goes to finish a putt with the flagstick still in. He pulls the flagstick to one side and rolls the putt with perfect speed so it doesnt touch the flagstick. Penalty or not?

Player A hits ball left and is unsure if its hazard/ob. He hits a provisional down the pipe. Player B hits his first ball down the fairway, but 15-20 yards short of A. A finds original ball in play and walks over after playing it to pick up provisional. He realizes player B has played his provisional ball. Does player B receive penalty for playing a ball that was never in play? If so, what penalty should be accessed?

 

Of course, I already know the answers to these. Have a shot at em.

i know something else that could happen and happened to me. hit green in reglation. and you dont have a clear shot to the hole, the rough is in your way. so you chip over and then tap in for par. happened to me once

Lefty-

#1 Penalty! The ball is not holed until it is at rest within the hole. Since it is impossible for the ball to be at rest without touching the flagstick. 2 stroke penalty.

 

#2 Penalty! Irrelevant if the ball was in play or not. B played the wrong ball. 2 stroke penalty. B must correct his error before playing the next hole ( ie find and play the correct ball or put a ball into play under penalty of stroke and distance 27-1) or be DQ'd (strokeplay) . In matchplay B loses the hole for playing the wrong ball. See rule 15-2 & 15-3.

Edit: It is possible to play a wrong ball in a hazard without penalty

#2 yes he does incur a penalty because he played a ball that was not his own. (doesn't matter if it was in play or not)

 

#1 I am unsure of, but I know you can not strike a putt or chip and then run up and pull the pin yourself, so this circumstance would probably fall under pulling the pin yourself during a shot which is not within the rules. I say Penalty

Well played guys. Penalties on both.

 

Jask-They've just switched the rules on you. Playing a wrong ball from a bunker results in a penalty because they allow you to identify the ball in a bunker now, and then re-create the lie. Changed in 2008.

Not to spoil the party, but if I remember correctly, technically if a player hits a green in reg....all strokes from that point on are considered putts for stat purposes.

 

E.g. Putt off the green and chip in would really count as a 2 putt. Similar to a putt that starts on the fringe and gets holed counts as a chip in, as well as a chip in from on the green also counts as a 1 putt.

#2 above cost me a medal this year.

 

I was on the 17th, 4 over (playing off 13) and nailed one miles down the middle. My best drive of the day - probably of the season. My playing partner carved his ball into heather on the right. In summer, the heather's thick in places, and you often don't find your ball if you don't see exactly where it goes. So my partner, quite reasonably, declared his intent to play a provisional. He then realised he had no golf balls left. So I reached into my bag, handed him one of my srixons with my usual marking of 3 green dots, and he nails it a long way down the middle.

 

When we get to where we think his first drive landed, after about a 2 minute search we find it, and he hacks out to about 70 yards short of the green. I then wander into the middle of the fairway, see a Srixon with the dots, and hit a lovely 8 iron to about 15ft. I then see another srixon 5 yards on, and go to pick it up. That's when I realise that this srixon looks brand new, and is a number 2: I was playing a 1. I've played the wrong ball, 2 shot penalty.

 

I must admit that a voice in my head was telling me 'just pick it up, no-one will ever know' and my playing partner was astonished that I called the penalty on myself, but you've got to have your self-respect, right?

 

I eventually finished 7 over for a net 66 and lost on countback.

I guess that's why you always see people marking balls when they're about to use them only

and not pre marking a whole sleeve b4 the round.

No, the drop is a penalty in that case. (just as normal drops are not considered strokes for stat purposes)

However if he had decided to play the shot from the creek (e.g. blast it out with a wedge) that would be considered a stroke....and hence a putt for stat purposes. (as he was already on the putting surface previous to it)

See that right there doesn;t make sense, if he played it from the water it counts as a putt but the drop doesn;t, he should have played it from the water to help out his putting stats, LOL

I believe Hbear is correct. Once you make a stroke from the putting surface (regardless of what club you use), every stroke afterwards is considered a putt.

Sorry, but it's still a 2-putt. Once you're on the green, all subsequent strokes count as a putt, even if from off the green.

I would say that Tiger four-putted that green for a bogey. Harsh? Maybe, but he shouldn't have putted it in the water if he didn't want the accolade.
