I think for golf purposes, the 50-55 mark is about right BUT - and this is the gods honest truth, at my old club, there was a senior vs. junior tournament pitting the youngest 16 who signed up against the eldest 16 who signed up - the age cut off to be a jr was 69 - needless to say we had a mature membership

The quick answer: It depends…

In the city where I live the senior programs are available to residents 55 and over. (or proof of disability)

The State of Ohio has the "Golden Buckeye" discount program for folks 60 and over. (or proof of disability)

One golf course I use offers senior discounts at age 60.

My "home" course will consider me a senior at age 62, later this year.

Another course says you become a senior at 65.

This particular forum allows senior status to anyone who feels they cannot play at a level consistent with their chronological age group. There are a number of participants here in their twenties and thirties.

Try a more "diplomatic" approach. When they check in, just quote/charge them the regular rate. They'll quickly point out that they get the senior rate, at which point you can give them an incredulous smile and say "you're kidding!" They'll eat it up...

Most wonderous thing about turning 60 was Culver's discount and qualifying for county's senior golf card. You must be 62 in surrounding counties. Unfortunately, none of the publinx in this area honor the senior rate on the weekends. Nice if you're retired or semi-retired, but many of us seniors are waiting for magic age when SS might kick in -- and that's becoming more of a moving target lately.

But if since im disabled that must be why they let me play the seniors at age 47 ?

I joined AARP this year at age 50. ...

If you haven't heard from AARP yet, you are either not a senior, or you live on Mars. They will notify you by mail when you qualify to join the senior tour. And they won't let up. Even if you give up and send them money, they will then send you a magazine every month reminding you just how lucky you are to be an old fart instead of dead.

Misunderstood me on this one......I am very diplomatic as I do not address them as Seniors I ask the question to the group " Any seniors checking in"? and I do use the line when they say they are " Let me see some ID..there is no way your 60. (cool) Even though I know they are seniors...my point was that they would rather pay the extra $$$ than say that they are seniors. :ok:

that reminds me of one of my favorite all time jokes. So indulge the quick thread jack, even though you all have probably heard it.

An old guy was sitting on a park bench crying. A cop comes up and says "hey oldtimer, are you ok?"

The guy looks up and says "I'm 77 years old, I have a 24 year old beautiful blonde that lives with me and offers me all the sex I can manage and cooks 3 meals a day for me" and he continues to cry. the cop says "Excuse me for being so bold, but that doesn't sound like a reason to be sitting on a park bench crying" The old guy looks up and says "I can't remember where I live"....Ba da dum..

Ok, so to answer the question. I think Atlanta Golfer said it correctly, I hit 50 this year as well but it seems all the courses offer discounts now at 55 or 60. I too have been getting solicited by AARP for almost a year now.

Courses around here require valid driver license before issuing senior ID or extending senior rate at semi-privates. Culver's seems to only require that you convince the teenager [since anything with gray hair or a few wrinkles or over 40 is old to these kids -- the discount is easy. As for AARP, received their "birthday" card before I got them from friends and relatives. I take great delight in filing all correspondence from that group.

Bunch of answers to this. My home course doesn't give senior rates until age 62, but the Men's Club senior championship age limit is 50. 62 qualifies you as a Master Senior in the Men's Club. You can join AARP at 50, get the senior drink at Taco John's at 60, I can't draw full social security until I'm 66+.

So at 62, I don't know if I'm a senior, but I'm defintely confused.

Seems to me we have two possible questions here: what is the legal age to be considered a senior -- and the answer is all over the barn because differrent courses, organizations, etc. define it differently. There's obviously no one age that answers this question. The answer is: whatever.

The more fascinating question to me is: what is the definition of senior in terms of the actual playing of the game. That is: when does decrepitude so compromise one's game that you cannot pass some agreed to norms, like: able to walk and play 18 holes, but not 27 or 36 or 45? Swing speed below 85MPH, or 80, or 75? Not able to hit a driver more than blank yards? Can't remember how many strokes actually taken on a hole when walking off the green (I've bumped into this one a few times!)?

At my home course, just about all the "seniors" walk. If you see a cart it's occupied by overweight kids in their thirties. In that department THEY'RE the "seniors."

As you can guess, I'm not pulling for the senior designation at all as a designation of how the game is played. If you're so short that you can't reach the fairway from the men's tees use the women's tees -- or drop the ball out there and call it 1. Once your game is so compromised that you can't play it the way the course is set up you've just moved beyond concern for the niceties of the rules and are admitting that it's just a good walk.

Most clubs here on Long Island, NY consider 62 to be Senior. Senior rates apply Monday-Thursday. Also a reduced Twi-Light rate for Seniors. No Senior rate for Friday, Saturday, Sunday from April - September, except Twi-Light. Twi-Light hours are adjusted by the time of year. 1:00 Fall/Winter, 3:00 Spring/Summer.

Seems to me that there are really several answers to this compelling question. My rules of thumb are the following:

1. Age at which I should qualify for a "senior" discount = my current age - one day

2. Age at which my golf partners should give me strokes for being a "senior" = my current age

3. Age at which I expect everyone else to defer to my judgment because I am a "senior" = my current age - 5 years

4. Age at which I think I am a "senior" deep down in my soul = my current age + one day

5. Age at which I will use forward tees, hit clubs with senior flex, have to ride in a golf cart because of my age, and/or wear an outfit consisting of plaid shorts and thigh-high black socks = my current age + never (I hope)
