Number 11 at Augusta National

Maybe one of the things Hogan figured out about winning Majors by 34 was not going for the green on 11 at Augusta, no matter how well you hit the ball, it wasn't a percentage play back then?

you need to edit this with even some decent grammar before anyone is going to be able to figure out the three different things you are trying to say at once

Much is written about how perfect Hogan hit it. However, one of Hogan's most famous bits of "course management" was purposely missing the green on number 11, because he was afraid of hitting it in the water. He knew he just needed a 4 and could chip and putt from short right of the green. So the question is, if he was such a great ballstriker, why the sudden lack of confidence on this hole?

I will use the word of a screen writer more eloquent than I:

I frequently play TOur 18 here in Dallas, and Amen Corner, a quite reasonable facsimile...anyway, I play 11 the same, as it's long SOB.

Unless I crush a drive, I usually just play toward the mounds short right of green, as it often will kick on, or worst case about the best up and down angle there is.

Hard to question the Hawk, and having played a very similar hole numerous times, he was correct in this case.

People are judging his statement with modern equipment and balls in mind. Balata balls used to curve a lot more, were more affected by wind, and didn't go as far as modern balls. Considering the conditions of his day I think it was a smart percentage play IMO.

I think it's one of those things a player says. Did he purposely MISS the green? I don't buy it for a second. Did he aim right? Sure, probably.

Even great ball strikers don't hit the ball perfectly.
