Is the best golf course I have ever played :) Also worth mentioning is that It hosts the best golf club meal I have ever eaten

The pictures I took are from hole 1-11 (phone packed up after this) and the video was frm the 11th tee. The pics do not do the course justice as you cannot see the undulations on fairways and greens. First round I kept hitting good shots and ending up 30 yards away or having to chip/putt up mt.Everest. Second round I learned from it and played a little better. No wind in the morning but the course was a different animal in the afternoon.

We played off the medal tee's, one infront of the open tees which looked bloody scary! It was just a magnificent day and again the best course i have ever played. Anyone who gets the chance should bite the persons arm off. I cannot speak highly enough of Royal St Georges

This IMO would take a lot to beat as my favourite. A big thanks to my friend James for the invite :)

Thanks for the report. I can't see the pictures - is anyone else having this problem? It might just be my browser here at work.

What other courses have you played in the UK and how would you rank them? I'm wondering how your list matches up with mine.

If you can get the all out there a long way, then you should really play it off of the Open tees. I played a comp there a couple of weeks ago and it was a real challenge (I couldn't even make it to the 2nd fairway!!!)

Great pics. Course looks fantastic but I wonder how on earth you get out of some of those bunkers? One or two looked plain ridiculous...

Cracking pics mate. It looks like you caught a decent bit of weather.

RSG has been on my list of still-to-play Open Championship Venues for a few years now. I've been to three Opens at the place but have never managed to sort out having my own go unfortunately. It's a long slog down to Kent from the old Peoples' Republic of Yorkshire.

Along with Muirfield and Prestwick it's a track I definitely want to play before I hang up the clubs and call it a day.

ummm long long list, To name a few:

Hoylake
Cinque Ports
Wentworth west, east.
Hankley common
Dundonald
Southport & Ainsdale
Sunnigndale Old & New
The Berkshire
Barrassie
Woburn
Brocket Hall
The Wisley

I think those are some of my favourites, but RSG topped the lot. It was just unreal.

Mat, the weather changed in terms of wind later on. The first hole in the morning I hit 3 wood 9 iron over the back. The afternoon I hit Driver 4 iron!

Just going through the pictures remind me of how good it is.

RSG is only about 30minutes from where I live so I really should make the effort to play it. I kinda want to wait though as I'm still trying to pull my 'game' together.

RCP is another course I really want too play also. I can get membership there for £225 a year... Almost tempting... trouble is i could only probably play it a few times.

Rang up the other day to arrange a tee time and was politely informed that as a PGA Professional we were required to bring a paying guest to accompany us. Could not be arranged at such short notice so we went to Walton Heath and played the Old Course.
AMAZING!

Defintely have to get to St Georges. Since being in the UK ive played Crowborough Beacon, Hever Castle and Walton Heath. Anyone keen for a game down kent ways?!?!

Happy memories. I was fortunate enough to play Sandwich a few years ago. It certainly isn't the prettiest course you'll ever play but one of the toughest. It looks benign from some tees, but by the end of the round I was mentally and physically drained. A great test of golf.

I'm making a welcome return to RSG on Tuesday. I have been told we will be playing from the Open tees and with it only being 52 weeks until the Open is held there. It could be pretty brutal (a lot of courses have a dress rehearsal a year before)

As a PGA Member I am given Courtesy for the day. However I believe the day fee including lunch is around £200

I played at Sandwich a few weeks ago and it was in gorgeous condition, especially considering the difficult winter they experienced. I heard they were burning off some of the rough since I was there so maybe you won't have the heaviest of hay to search through on the off chance you hit one outside the fairway!

There's a remote possibility I may get to play there again next spring before they close the course in preparation for the Open. If not I will definitely return in 2012 to have another go. The only other Open Rota course I've played is Birkdale and while I thought it was excellent there are few courses anywhere comparable with Royal St. Georges in my estimation. Dornoch probably comes close but I'd rather play RSG by far.

Replying to a long-ago query, I thought I'd add my thoughts on comparing the two courses in question.

Absent the comparison with Royal St. Georges I'd say Royal Cinque Ports is an awfully fine links course with a few of my favorite holes anywhere (sixth and tenth in particular). And it is a fine and welcoming club located just on the outskirts of Deal which is a personal favorite location of mine. It's really hard to fault the course at Deal and I personally would rate it in the top level among courses I've played in the UK and USA. I would never pass up a chance for a round there.

That said, for my part Royal St. Georges is at an elevated level all its own. There is no place in the world I'd rather play. The golf is top-notch, the course conditions always approach perfection and the setting is magnificent and thrilling. Deal is a course to play at every reasonable opportunity, Sandwich is a course for which one makes arrangements to play, reasonable opportunity or not.
