What Ever Happened to....

Carl Paulson? Was making his way up the tour ladder, finishing 4th at the TPC and 2nd at another event...then never heard of again. Might have gotten injured. He was a pretty good junior player when I was growing up.

Harry Rudolph? AJGA First Teamer like 3 times. Played at Arizona when Phil was there. Won some college tournaments. Never made the big tour as far as I know. Funny that I played with him in a college tourney and he didn't break 90 that day. Even so, you could tell he had game. Everything looked solid, but he must have taken 10 penalty strokes. I played with Phil the second day, and Phil shot 64. I found out right then and there that I had no frickin chance.

Rex Caldwell

Finished 2nd in several tournaments in late 70's, without winning. Looked like a bowler with puffy hair and a big mustache. Played Ping Eyes and had one of those huge white Ping tour bags.

Chris Patton

Huge fat guy with a mullet haircut. Made Daly look in shape and less of a redneck by comparison. Had a brilliant amateur career at Clemson, including the 89 US Amateur. Also a long hitter, routinely winning long drive contests at tournaments. Was circled as the next great pro then "poof" disappeared.

Jim Benepe

Small thin guy. Won Western Open in mid-80's while an amateur playing on Northwestern golf team.

Mr. Big, Phil Blackmar is on the Champions Tour. He has had a number of solid finishes.

Jesper is kicking it on Tour. He has played six times this season. 3 Missed Cuts, 1 WD, a 42nd and a 57th.

Bob May is on the Nationwide Tour. He has had 3 Missed Cuts and a T47 in four starts this season.

Bill Glasson hasn't played since 07. Found this on wiki:

"Glasson has had difficulty maintaining his PGA Tour privileges in his 40s, due in large part to medical problems. He has had to play some on the Nationwide Tour, where his best finish is a 2nd at the 2003 Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. Glasson has had at least 19 surgeries on various parts of his body including, but not limited to, his elbow, sinus, knee, lip, forearm and lower back.[1] He enjoys hunting, fishing and farming in his spare time. He lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma."

Jay Don Blake is a good pull. He is a rookie on the Champions Tour but I don't think he has played yet this year. Here is an article on him:

This is a great thread.

Someone mentioned Fasth; he took some time out to remodel his, ahem, unorthodox swing. Playing again now and looks pretty good.

What about JJ Henry and Lucas Glover? JJ really impressed me at the K Club Ryder Cup, but barely heard a whimper since (though I think he's playing well this week?)> And I thought Glover was one of the best young US players?

Wasn't it Jim Lampley who was getting all excited in the 93 Ryder Cup about Peter Baker?

"He WILL win at least one Masters!" or something like that. I can't ever remember Baker doing anything after that, except help Woosie's Ryder Cup team one year as a non player.

Lamps, what a ******. I remember this as well. Later in the round Baker made another birdie and Lamps said something like "Earlier I said he would win the Masters, make that TWO Masters!!!"

How about the winner of one of the worst major championships ever, Paul Lawrie???

I was gonna say, Lampley's assertion was 2 Masters for Baker. It was based on putting. He did look to have a phenomenal putting touch during that Ryder Cup.

I like Jim Lampley. He went to the same high school I attended, in Miami. And no one gets more enthused about obscure Olympic events than he does. But Lampley throws in some oddities. A few years ago he wrote a long emphatic article on Huffington Post, claiming on election day 2004 he carefully checked the Bush/Kerry betting odds in Las Vegas sportsbooks all afternoon, and how the odds were moving based on early exit polls. Incredibly, no one called him on it. It earned responses from many political commentators for the next week or two but they all took bizarre angles, wonderfully ignorant that Lampley's premise was impossible. There is no political wagering in Nevada. In fact, you can't even bet on sporting elections like the Heisman Trophy. It has to be decided on the field of play. Besides, even if wagering were legal in Nevada it would be closed before election day, not allowed to continue once vital results became available. Lampley had basically made it up, or more likely had embellished what he had been told, that the political odds had moved on man-to-man sites like Intrade, where wagering does continue as the results become available.

David Howell, had a serious bank injury about 2 years ago and after recovering is back on the European tour, had a play off loss last year but not really had any other success as of yet.

P U Johansson

Won a PGA event last year somewhere in Russia, Kazakstan, Georgia, Ukraine? but these events only draw mainly lesser known pro's.

Both are currently fully exempt on the PGA Tour.

Really? I hadn't seen them in a while.

I always rooted for Molder...he has one pectoral muscle and plays through that handicap. Special kid.

Forrest Fezler

That goes way back, probably early '70s. Inverrary was a chic new PGA event, with Jackie Gleason and Bob Hope getting tons of publicity by playing against other in the pro am. No one had ever heard of Forrest Fezler but the guy with the distinct name was a sensation all week until he blew it over the final holes.

Forrest Fezler is probably best known for donning a pair of shorts to wear for the last hole of the 1983 US Open in protest of the long pants only rule.

What ever happened to Forest Fezler? He now has his own golf course design business having been an associate of the late Mike Stranz and having been involved with the creation of Tobacco Road, Tot Hill, Calidonia, Bull's Bay, etc...
