The mentions of Forrest Fezler brings back memories. He was a factor in the Massacre at Winged Foot in 1974 when Hale Irwin won. My memory of Fezler is a big mustache and very high hands at the top with a reverse C finish-typical swing of the time. I think he won once- a Southern Open maybe at Columbus CC.

Speaking of Winged Foot- just to let the younger guys know- in 1974 Hale Irwin hit 4 wd into the 17th hole and 2 iron into 18 (I could have it backwards-I am old afterall). You don't see that anymore!

Also a long hitter, routinely winning long drive contests at tournaments. Was circled as the next great pro then "poof" disappeared.

 

I played high school golf against him and worked with Chris at Carolina Springs in the 80s. We played together several times, but one time in particular stands out. We played 27 holes, he shot 33, 32, 31. I would have bet anything he would have made it.

 

He was a super nice guy, and last I heard he is a teaching pro at Fox Run CC in SC.

I remember that Golf Digest did a photo feature on his swing that showed some odd feature about it...like he was looking away from the ball or something. I always wondered if he saw the pictures and tried to do something about it. Years ago (many years ago) Golf Digest analyzed Jerry Pate's swing, and at impact his left arm was bent. All the GD staff teachers made comments about how bad it was. I wondered at the time if Pate was affected by that...his career never reached the heights of his early years.

Gary Nicklaus played on the Nationwide Tour last time I heard and is also concentrating on course design with pop.

 

Wayne Grady is a commentator for the BBC - and pretty good too.

 

I assume the last is about Monty? - Announced as the next Ryder Cup captain - I hope he has a grumpy fit and resigns the post. Other than that, who cares?

Seriously, about 60-70% of the names on this list are on the leaderboard at the beginning of the week on either the PGA, Champions, or European Tours. If you are wondering "where they are" they are playing professional golf.

 

And you should be paying more attention.

I agree that maybe Chris should've played, but I'm gonna blame Hal Sutton on that Ryder issue for throwing a player under the bus like that. He's the captain and it should've been handled internally. If he didn't want to play Hal should've just picked someone else and moved on, that media frenzy didn't help anything.
