Pics of my *TOUR* Grind PING I5's... A MUST see for PING fans

Springbok

Recommended Posts

Here are the pics of my TOUR grind PING I5's, directly from the PING WRX Department. The TOUR grind consists of a top-line grind to narrow the top line, and a trailing edge grind to narrow the sole. While the trailing edge grind is available to the public, the top-line grind is not. The clubs were refinished by WRX, so the irons look like they were cast that way. Not a cheap process, but I am happy with it. I have not yet hit them. I will do so tomorrow. The first set has Rifle Flighted 6.0's. The second has CS-Lite S-Flex. The clubs are blue dot (1* up), 1/4" long, D1 SW (D2 for PW).

The comparison pics are between the I5's with a tour grind, my current I3+'s, and pics of the standard I5's (sent to me by a buddy).

Those are sweet!!

How did you get PING to do the topline? What does the sole grind help with?

I just switch to the i5's after playing Hogan Apex + for 5 years. I am having a hard time adjusting to the thicker topline.

OK Guys, here is the review. I took them out to the range today, and hit them side by side with my current irons (PING I3+'s).

After warming up with my I3+'s

PING I5's with Rifles

I only hit 5 shots with the 8 iron to realize that ball flight with these shafts were not for me. I am a low ball hitter who favors a draw (even though my swing promotes a fade). The CS-Lite shafts have been a tremendous help to my game, since they help me get the ball up, and enable me to hit a draw. While the height with the rifles were fine, the ball flight was straight or slight fade.

PING I5's with CS-Lite

My I3+'s are the same specs as these I5's, except for the fact that they are D0, and the I5's are D1. The look of the top-line on these I5's is amazing. I have owned 2 other sets of I5's, and could never get used to the top-line. Ball flight was noticeably higher with the I5's over my I3+'s. Distance with the I5's was about 1/2 club shorter. Flight pattern was the same. I hit the 8 iron and the 4 iron. While the 4 iron was noticeably more forgiving that the I3+ 4 iron, the 8 iron was inconsistent for me.

Result

Call me crazy. I prefer my I3+'s. I'll admit it. I like offset. More specifically, I like offset irons, with a medium top line and medium sole width. E.g. the other set of irons that really appeals to me is the Titleist 775.CB's (although I have not hit them). This look installs confidence in me. The Ho in me wants to experiment with new irons, but I am past the point that I play what's new, or cool. I play what works. I have tried 4 times(unsuccessfully) to replace the I3+'s, but have not found anything yet. I don't even know how much they cost me, since I have not been billed yet, but off to eBay they go.

  • 4 months later...

He probably took the pictures off since this thread is old and no longer has the set since he loves his S58's. It's the I5 model that he had the grinding done.

But those G5 has similar grind done.

Guys, I think made this post at least 3-4 months ago. That is (as someone else noted) at least 4 sets ago. I currently have S58's. They are absolutely fantasic irons. The best I have ever owned. I have never had confidence in long irons until now. I can't beleive how easy these are to hit, compared to the G5's. Makes the G5's, and I5's look like blades from the 70's.

You are saying the S58s are way more forgiving than I5s or G5s?I don,t play any of them but I thought the S58 was Pings "player iron" .Also you said you liked offset? When I demoed the S59,i5,and g5 early this year the G5 I thought was WAY more forgiving than the S59.So the S58 is that much different than the s59?

I would just add that the "topline" grind although not listed in the WRX brochure, can be had by the everyday golfer. I called Ping Customer Service, and they informed me that they would gladly do a topline grind for me.

The price they quoted me (approx. $10 per club) was also very reasonable in my opinion.
