Phoenix (area) Course Conditions

Any problems right now?

I am leaving for Scottsdale next week and curious if there are any problems with the following courses --

Trilogy-Vistancia
Dinosaur Mountain
Raven @ Verrado
Eagle Mountain
We-Ko-Pa (both)
Troon Pinnacle


I'm asking because about 3 years ago I showed up at a course to find out their water was contaminated and ruined the course. The reasoning sounded legitimate but it didn't overshadow the fact that I wasted an entire day (and $$) in Arizona trying to play an unplayable golf course. I would prefer to know now and change my schedule. Yes, I doubt there are any issues with these courses, but better safe than sorry!

No.

They had "natural salt contamination of the water source" that burned everything...mostly the greens. It was beyond brutal. The course name changed (slightly) soon after and I THINK changed ownership but I could be wrong. About 1hr outside of downtown.

That's all I'm saying...which is plenty!

I think I know which one. There have been many upscale public CCFAD courses built in the 90-'s and early 00's that tried bentgrass greens. It can work on a private course in the slightly higher elevation of the foothills, but a public daily fee gets too much traffic. Most every one has wound up converting to bermuda. That may be as much the case as the stated contamination issue.

But the buildup of salt in the roots is a problem known to any successful backyard gardener. I mentioned the TPC because a couple of years ago they had to re-turf their fairways. More of a gradual deterioration due to the high salt content of the reclaimed water. The annual overseed also puts a lot of stress on the bermuda root system. You would never know it right now because the courses look and play perfect with the winter rye overseed. When it dies off in May, some places can look a little scruffy.

That said, this time of year (Jan-April) has usually the best conditions of the winter/ryegrass season.

I'll PM you. There are 4 guys and 3 girls going out and we usually split the guys and girls. If we mix it up I will let you know and we'll definitely play. -JS

Saw that today, sucks since today was mid 80's and perfect, good thing is everything dries up pretty quick around here though. I dont trust any weatherperson outside a 24 hour window though. Never know It could turn out to be a nice day.

Me personally, I would not play Vistancia again for awhile. It WAS beautiful. The tee boxes, fairways were awesome last week and I think the greens "were" good under all the rocks. There was ZERO sand in any of the bunkers...just dirt and rocks leaving the greens by 10am littered with dime and nickel sized stones and i dont mean just a few....hundreds/thousands...it was ridiculous to say the least..from 100 yards out you could see all the rocks on the greens

Dirt......with roots from dead weeds, ROCKS etc....NOT anything that resembled SAND....they need to get a clue up there

Sucks about Thursdays weather. Whenever I make plans to play a nice course, seems like it attracts the rain

played Longbow - they punched their greens last week. Overall course was in decent condition
