1958 Wilson Staff Dyna-Powered Irons 1-PW,DW,SW

Recommended Posts

Rechromed.. Play or display???
I was lucky enough to get these from a collector friend of mine.. I just love them. I cant think of a better looking iron.. these have it all.. the 50s styling is so great!
These are the second year of manufacture of Dynapower irons, and they were rechromed by the Iron Factory.
Back in the early 90s, I found a set of these, 2-9 and SW at a garage sale.. I ended up getting a good amount of money for the wedge, and sold the irons for a smaller amount.. I have been kicking myself ever since..
These came up for sale so I grabbed them.. I initially thought I would play them this year along with my MacGregor 653 Eye O Matic woods and IM 5 Ironmaster putter, but they are just so beautiful I feel like I shouldnt hit them.. Whadya think?? They set up really nice, and I just LOVE the look at address with the slightly thicker and rounded topline.
They are set up with DG S300 shafts, and winn grips.. I will be regripping them with GripMaster leather wrap (Black) grips. The set is built off a 38.0 5 iron. Swingweights are generally D1-D3 in the irons, with the wedges heavier (The SW is D8)
I Love the "Fluid Feel" and arrow on the hosel.
The only 1958 Dyna-Powered iron that was available and not included in this set is a "Triple Duty" Wedge, which it turns out I already had, but in original condition. I wasnt planning on rechroming it, but I may do so to add to this set.

Is this a trick question? They are truly a beautiful set of irons and if it were me, I'd want to know if they felt every bit as good as they looked. Personally, nothing irritates me more more than a set of clubs in mint condition that have never seen a blade of grass or a ball - what's the point? True, they may have some residual value, but if thet's all you see in a set of clubs then I'm afraid you're missing the point. If you really want a display set of irons, then just get a set of niche JDM forgings like everyone else. If you really like the game of golf, get them out on the course and enjoy how they were intended to be used. No headcovers of course.

Their residual value has nothing to do with whether or not I would play them, they essentially have NO collector value anyway, as they have been rechromed, reshafted, etc.
I was just hesitant because of their beauty.. I have plenty of classic iron sets that I could put in my vintage gamer bag, but these are just so pure, I wasnt sure if I should play them.
As for headcovers, thats a tough one. I generally think headcovers on the irons are sacrilege, but with a special club, or a special set, I possibly be open to it..
Besides, didnt Judge Smails have a cover on the Billy Baroo???

I aggree with the statement above from one of the forum members. Play one round of golf in perfect conditions on a well groomed course.

Golf clubs are made to be played. It would be like breeding a throughbred from great blood lines and then not racing him (Kentucky Derby was testerday!).

I might feel differently if they hadn't been rechromed. As you said they have lost their collector value. If you decide to put these up for good you can always have them rechromed again. Great job by the Iron Factory BTW.

Since you've already taken away the collector's value of the clubs you might as well play them. They look fun!

Wasnt me! I bought them this way..

Be that as it may, you didn't purchase them as an investment. They would look pretty if they were mounted, but IMO they would be even more beautiful in a golf bag out on the course.

What is really interesting is that I have an IDENTICAL set in IDENTICAL pristine restored condition, new DGS300 shafts, same ferrules as shown, Winn grips. Even missing the triple wedge but containing the PW, DW, SW. I got them on eBay about two years ago from a collector who was trying to sell most of his collection of restored Wilson Staffs from the 50s & 60s. Maybe even the same guy? I don't remember the seller's id. I paid more for them than I should have (given my circumstances at the time), but not more than their value.

I have hit a few balls off a fibrebuilt mat with the 5-iron, but that is all. I display them in a nice felt-lined oak case.

John,

I am also lucky enough to have picked an almost identical set of 58/59 Dynas (2-PW) which have been rechromed, S300s and pro only grips. Again they were pretty much unhit when I got them. They are wonderful and I game them all the time at the moment. I love them. If there is a downside is that they are so heavy that any other classic blade now feels unpleasantly light.

Cheers, Graham

Beautiful clubs John.

They definately deserve to be played (screaming to be played actually) and I completely understand your quandry. It's not a question of monetary value, its all in the aesthetics.

Do I play them and risk the inevitable wear and tear or do I just store/display them and enjoy their pristine beauty?

Tough choice.

Ironically I am now pondering the same question.
