Why isn't there more love for OnOff stuff?

Recommended Posts

I've got a 14* Fairway Arms 3 wood and about the nicest Sand Wedge you have ever seen both by OnOff. But, I see their stuff routinely sell for about half of what Epon gear goes for. What's the deal? Why isn't there a bigger OnOff following? The stuff is made great, has a very cool look and feel. I have a few Epon sticks, as well. And, I can tell you that the OnOff stuff is absolutely every bit as playable.

I'd love to hear some opinions on this.

hmnmmmm, well im not sure if thats a fair sumation of on-off at all really. their drivers for a start are top quality. if have slower swing speed than 100, then i can assure you these drivers are NOT average one bit and with the roddio shaft in them they are absoutely superb. and if you hit the plus irons, im pretty sure u wont call them average/ on-off equipment is good.

Marketing by the other site is the only reason that anyone would buy Epon.

OnOff clubs are fine, but other than the 247 irons, I don't think they are anything special. On par with Tourstage, but average JDM equipment.

Really bad answer.

Really good answer

Tario, who blogs the "other site" has a set on ONOFF irons in his bag. Says they are the easiest irons for him to hit/play.

The reason on this site they don't get any love is because they are geared a bit more toward the average Golfer.

Golfwrx doesn't have any average Golfers....

I could duplicate the question but, change OnOff to Srixon, I guess it would then come down to personal prefrence would'nt it? Or could it be lack of marketing?

Lack of marketing, along with the price point being in the higher end. Brand recognition just isn't there yet in the States. Get Rickie Fowler to play them, and they'll sell like hot cakes!!! Best case scenario for OnOff would be to get some young rising star like Ishikawa to play their irons and have him come over to the US Tour with a HUGE On/Off bag to showcase that they are world class. I am a huge fan of OnOff. I am gaming their 2008 irons (they don't even have a model #) and love them. I just picked up and started gaming their FW woods and they are great. I have played plenty of rounds with the GM of OnOff locally here in Socal and had plenty of time to chat about who OnOff targets their gear to ... it's the average golfer.

Granted, there are some JPGA Pro's gaming some of their higher end sticks but let's face it - most of us would probably hit a CB much easier than the 247's. Golf is already hard enough as it is. I am a fan of any gear that makes hitting the golf ball that much easier. Ultimately, the ho in all of us will end up deciding which brand to try next.

my bud and i have been playing the on-off red for a few months, i got one to try out bec he picked up 20 yards with his 11* model! we were all utterly amazed, he wasnt that long before now were all pretty close. The on off red series is pretty much the best feeling easy to hit driver ive used . Of our group of 6 regulars 4 of us now have or use the onoff drivers. we use the 2009 and 2010 red models with the roddio pentacross, the mi6 and the shingo spec shafts .u cant play around with the shafts on these ,on-off work can only be done by a daiwa rep. they drive around in black tour van making clubs for people. (what a job!) . every one of us has impoved our driving numbers by a noticable margin and it s not meant to be long driver. if your thinking u need a light easy to hit driver this is it. i assure you , u wont be dissapointed. and its one of the most beautufl looking drivers out there .
i completely agree that daiwa could do worse than getting an american wunderkid tour player using onoff along with shingo and they will sell oooooodles of them
actually im very im surprised their shafts arnt more widly used.
you would think a co. that has been making fishing rods since moses played full back for jerusalem would probably know a thing or two about carbon pole technology. when you try them out u will have a hard time going back.

Well, marketing is one thing... But for me, in terms of Iron, I never considered OnOff because their irons are made in China as compare to Miura and Endo which are made in Japan.... That alone had instantly turned me off...

Not all On Off are done in china....the 247's were done by Miura. Final grinding of all are done in Japan...On Off Plus and 247 combo is pretty sweet...

Endo also has factories in Thailand if memory serves... as for the forging and finishing on the OnOff's... I spent some time trying to find something that 'worked' better for me and was unable to do so back when I played quite a bit. Of course, I will try again sometime

Don't get me wrong, I'm not implying quality issues when I say made in China being a turn off.... It's just that when I'm paying essentially the same price level for comparable product while knowing the product is made in China which I know has a lower production cost... that just doesn't sit well with me...

Yea, I know about Endo and that's another reason I've never touched any Thailand Endo stuff as well....

Note that I'm strictly talking about Irons here as I know for wood where if there's any Titanium component, you won't be able to get way from China.... That I have accepted as a fact....

I can understand where you are coming from - I went on a massive 'Made in Japan' kick with my equipment a few years ago. A few things made me worry a bit less - seeing some less than stellar finish work on a few made in Japan clubs, Japanese manufacturers doing more and more production in China, and having great results with blue printed or tuned clubs regardless of where the components originated. I currently have a mix of clubs made in the US (hard to find nowadays), Japan, and China. Soft shafts in a few clubs aside, they all work very well for me.

If you can find a bag full of made in Japan goodness - and if they suit your eye and fit your game - having fun with them is the most important thing. Just be sure to post a few pictures as well!
