stolen clubs

a few years ago, i had my clubs stolen off of my driveway, obviously i was upset,
but the funny thing is, a month or two later, i was playing at a course, and i noticed that the group in front of me HAD MY CLUBS,
i was 99.9% sure that they were mine,had the club with the broken headcover, the dinged up wedge, the 7 iron with the missing paintfill.
to top it off, the person wasnt a very good player, and my irons were blades, which raised a little suspicion as to if they were really his.
shouldi have pursued this or no, i didnt as i was afraid that if they really stole the clubs, they knew where i lived

Should have gone back to the clubhouse and called the police (assume you filed a report when they were stolen).

Welcome to WRX indeed!

Never hesitate to call the police, that's what they are there for. Assuming you did file the initial police report at your home, and gave a complex description or serial number list to the police, it should have been a no brainer. I would have called the police and kept playing my round and told the officer, "meet me on #10 tee". You did file a police report right?

hahaha yeah, i didn't even notice that it was years. when i read it last night, i thought it said weeks. those clubs could have even changed hands in a few years. it's possible that the person who was playing in front of you wasn't the one who stole them. i wouldn't lose sleep over it at this point, either. how many clubs have gone through your bag since then?

very strange situation to be in....

but in my case, it was the other way around

i was playing at my local course having fun with my buddies, all of a sudden a guy from the group ahead of us came over asking if we picked up a sand wedge, i told him no and he comes over to my cart and looks at my bag, he pulls my sand wedge out and looks at it like its his, me without even looking at my wedge told him that its my wedge with chrome peeling of the toe and grooves, and he slams it back into my bag saying "funny thats exactly how my wedge looks too", i was pissed as hell but for having no reason to get mad at something i did not do wrong and mess up a good round i was having, pulled the wedge out of the bag, walked up to his face and showed him the stampings i stamped MYSELF with MY initials saying "are your initials JK too? and do you have it stamped with yellow and blue paintfills?" he had absolutely nothing to say and left the course in middle of his game shamefully

thanks to seeing "do it youself" instructions here on golfwrx for stamping onw wedges, i was able to continue playing a great round, i think i went 2 under for the remaining holes after dealing with this dumb guy

i was just wondering if i shouldve done something then

not losing any sleep over but still playing the "what-ifs" once in a while

i had filed a police report, but had not included the serial numbers of my clubs

 

i had actually caught the people playing with them a month or so after they were stolen

if you can't prove they are yours there's not much you can do in terms of getting the police involved. They'll come and humor you but in the end nothing will happen, because the guy will just say they are his and he threw out the receipts. Legally the police can't really do anything unless you've got serial numbers and etc... Your best recourse is to take down his license plate number, and then go home and plan an insanely elaborate plot of revenge like in "law abiding citizen" or "man on fire". That's probably what i would have done, but that's just me

I think you did the right thing especially with the time frame involved. Here is a scenario that I dont think has been mentioned yet. Say you decided to go all haywire on the poor guy just to find out he bought the sticks from a pawnshop or something like play it again sports and he wasnt even the guy who stole them in the first place?

25+ years ago my brother, who at the time was an assistant pro at a very upscale jewish club in S.E. Michigan had his clubs stolen sitting in front of the pro shop.

2 weeks later, the putz who stole them (some kid) came to play a round of golf at the very same club... what an idiot... just thought I'd share!!!

(my brother got his clubs back).

IIRC, the kid worked at the club.

So?

If they clubs were stole, it doesn't matter if they have been bought and sold a dozen times after that. They are still the property of the person they were originally stolen from. The people that subsequently purchased the stolen clubs (say from a pawn shop) are SOL. They have not rights as far as the clubs go.

And yea I would have done something IF I could have determined they actually were my clubs. No need to "go haywire", but there is nothing wrong with standing up for your rights. Inform them the clubs were stolen from you and call the police to get the matter settled.

I cant believe you did nothing? You should have at least called the police? Those were your clubs that some jerk stole, you confronted the guy.
