I'm considering the BH-5 or Edge CFT irons for purchase either over the winter as prices bottom (maybe a little more than they already are) or next spring. I'm just getting back into the game after 3-4 years of minimal play (family, career, etc) so I'm gaming some Super-GI shovels, but I know once I start knocking on the door of 90 I'll want to transition to something with a more traditional appearance at setup and maybe even less offset. The Hogans seem to be hard to beat for the used price, under $100 and sometimes approaching $70. I've pretty much narrowed it down to either these or the Adams A4r, another major bargain with a little more tech and still (mostly) traditional appearance.

Can anyone comment on the differences in the BH-5 and BH-5 offset, other than the obvious difference in offset? Are the soles and, more importantly, the toplines the same on both? Or thicker on the Offset model?

It's crazy that you can go on Golfsmith and get a set of BH-5 3-E or Edge CFT 3h/4-E, Colonial 56 + 60, and CS-3 Neutral or Draw for around $150 total...

I've got a set of Apex '99 blades at home right now. They were in the bag for the majority of this season until I decided to get something a bit more forgiving.

They are, without a doubt, the softest irons I've ever hit. They feel absolutely amazing on a pure shot. They're also some of the best looking irons out there. I don't ever plan to get rid of them. I'm sure they'll make it back into the bag one of these days when I get my swing back in the groove.

Just 2 sets at home right now. Refinished Redlines with PX 5.0 (soon to be changed to something smoother) and a very nice condition set of Apex II white cameo's. The Apex II's are getting Nippon 1150GH S soft stepped soon (that's going to be my winter project.) Just my opinion that those are two of the sweetest heads they ever made.

Recently decided to throw my Apex PCs back in the bag at the expense of the MP-53 for a couple rounds. Love both sets but those hogans are the best damn forged clubs I have ever hit. Shafts on those things are probably like 20 yeras old, but I just received some brand new apex #4 shafts in the mail...so im all set for another 10 years :)

The "new" gamers are 2-PW Hogan FTXs with C-Tapers X..

They just got back in play after spending years on the bench while my Apex 2-PW with PX7.0s were in play!

Can't remember the last time I've seen anyone (but me) on the course with a Hogan stand bag either

As I was reading this thread I was thinking what a sick set up that would be. Review please!!!

Played the last month of this season with my old set of 06 blades... great iron, but I'm not used to that head shape anymore. If anyone wants them they're hanging out as paper weights on the work bench- head only- look maybe 1 season old.

I too wish that Callaway would come out with an awesome set of Hogan blades... That'd be :partytime2:

Just put a set of Hogan PCs back into play along with persimmon woods. They are a bit tougher to hit than my 681s since they don't have the hickory dowel in the hosel and they are a blade-on-blade design instead of a muscleback.

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver   1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood   1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex)  Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex)   Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped)    Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)
Odyssey ProType 9 putter

I picked up a set of Apex Edge Pros earlier this year. Absolutely the softest GI clubs I have ever hit. I really like them but wish they had a modern sole grind (ala MP-53's). They are doing battle with my 53's for a spot as my back up set.
[/quote]

I have the very same two sets as you, as well as Apex Plus. You are right about the sole grind, MP 53's are fabulous, one of the things I like best about that club. The Apex Edge Pro has that great soft off the face sensation while still feeling solid. The first time I showed up for a lesson with them my instructor started hitting the 5 iron and said "NOW this is a forged club not like my AP2". No knock on the Titty stuff those were his words about the irons he owns and uses.

I took my Redlines to the range today and was reminded of just what a great iron they are. Despite the small head and amount as much forgiveness as a SS Kommandant whose just been stung by a wasp I hit them really well. The feel and ballflight is sensational.

I might have to go out and make a fool of myself with them soon.
