Which club do you use around the green?

If you have to make a chip shot to the green, which club do you use: 7 iron, PW, SW, Gap wedge?

 

What loft of club is it? Which club do you decide to use based on the distance from the green?

9 times out of 10 I'll use a 52* wedge. I can hit it high or low, make it release or load it up with spin and make it stop.

It truly depends, but this is the basic rule I follow:

 

Around the green:

 

If I need the ball to fly 1/3 of the way to the hole then roll the remaining 2/3, I will use my 52* wedge.

 

Conversly, if I need it to fly 2/3 and roll 1/3, I will go with the 58* wedge.

 

Caveat:

 

The further away from the hole, the less the ball will roll (due to more spin). E.g. if I want to play the 2/3 fly 1/3 roll with the 58* it won't work if I'm 25 yards out, at which point it will become more like 7/8 fly 1/8 roll. Take another 25 yards, now 50 yards out I can use the 58* to stop the ball almost were it lands.

 

The point of the story is that there isn't really one club for one chip. It all depends on the particulars of the situation. Lie is also an important factor. Ball in rough or shortgrass is really determinative of what shot I'll play and with which club. I will, however, say that I rarely chip with anything more than my 52* as I can play a bump and run with it just as well as with an 8-iron but with better feel and weight.

Just off the green: Putter or 3 wood.

 

Long bump and run: 8 iron to PW

 

Chips shots with a bit of release: 52*

 

High spinny shots: 58*

almost all of the time i use my 9 iron if im on the fringe, but out of the rough i use me 56* wedge.

51* gap wedge (Callaway calls it AW - approach wedge I guess). Nice chipper with a little release.

I use my lob wedge for most of my chipping inside 30 yards. if I want it to run I deloft it. I have about 6 different swings for this one club that work very well using much the same logic as the above post. I wouldn't recommend my method, but using 7,8, or 9 iron to chip doesn't feel right. they're too long to get comfortable with and for a chip swing they feel yippy. The lob wedge is short and heavy and I can focus on mastering one club. it works for me -- I just started shooting in the 70s consistently.

I'll chip with anything from my 54* SW up to about a 6 iron. If possible, I try to land the ball in the first 10-30% of the green between me and the pin...and then let it roll out from there like a putt. I try to imagine such a shot and then select my club based on the trajectory. If I can't imagine such a shot, then it probably doesn't call for a chip shot.

depending on the lie, green, up/downhill and distance (to go, to fly, to roll)...i use anything from my 46* PW, 53*GW, 56*SW or 60*LW. i used to try and be phil and use my LW for every greenside chip but i've sinced learned that sometimes it gets me into more trouble than it gets me out of.

in the past it was the 60* wedge almost exclusively, however I am trying to use other clubs now and expand my short game repertoire.

60º almost always..can hit any shot with it, and can control spin too.

As pointed out by others, it all depends on the situation and what I have to work with.

 

Fringe, putter 100% of the time.

 

5 to 50 yards out, and a place to bump one up the FW and onto the green, I'll use a 6 or 7 iron.

 

5 - 75 yards out and need to fly one on, I'll use my EYE2+ SW.

 

75 - 100 yards out I'll use my PW.

depending on the situation and where the pin and my ball lies, i'll take up a 56* sand wedge or my 60* lob wedge.
