Fairway Woods with a deep face?

Hey all,

 

I've been using my 3 wood off the tee quite a bit, since I've been playing a shorter & tighter course than what I'm used to. I currently carry a ping TiSi Tec 3-wood at 14 degrees. I'm not sure if you guys remember these things but its a monster. I can hit it high and straight routinely, which is good. However, it has a shallow face, and I'm thinking that I'd like to try something with a slightly deeper face to give me some more workability options.

 

Any suggestions? I'm open to trying anything.

 

I'm not sure I want to replace it, I just want to try some other stuff out and see if my inability to draw/fade the Ping is me or the club. Thanks!

The two fairway models that come to mind now are the Cobra Speed models and the Ping G5. If you want more workability, the X Speed model would probably be best for you. But if you're loyal to Ping, try the G5. It's a lot bulkier than other fairways I've tried, but you should definitely give it a look. But if you want a good deal, try the Cobra SZ fairways. They have a smaller profile and a deeper face. (I'd sell mine if you're interested :yahoo: ) But at any rate, give those models a shot.

i'm going to throw the nike t-60 out there. deep face, awesome off he tee, and easy of the fairway.

I agree with both, the G5 is great, SZ is great, T60 is great as well. I used to have the G5 5 wood and the T60 4 wood both are very long and easy to hit. But what I cant seem to keep out of my bag for very long is my TISI Tec 5 wood. These woods I believe are one of the best fairways woods ever made. MONSTER long and a breeze to hit off of the tee or turf. Another club to look at would be the sonartec woods. I use the 2.5 SS with a YS-7+ shaft and it is fantastic. Not as hard to hit I believe as some other woods and perfect trajectory. I say go out and try a couple and see what you hit best or like better. But in the end dont get rid of your TiSi Tec because you will regret it :cheesy:!

I would try something in the Sonartec line. If you like a small head, go for the NP99, otherwise the ss 2.5 is a mid faced model and the 3.5 a deep faced model. All are excellent.

Agreed, Sonartec makes some excellent fairways. The 3.5 is the deepest of the bunch and might be what you're looking for. The NP-99 is actually one of the more shallow faced fairways that I have owned, however, in addition to the driving cavity (raises COG) there must be some internal weighing going on (in confuntion with the rear-horseshoe back weight) to keep the ball flight more penetrating. This fairway wood is extremely workable, but needs a good swing put on it. That said, if I can put a good swing to this club, anybody can. :cheesy:

If you check the Golf Digest Hotlist, they give the face depth measurements of the drivers and fairway woods.

 

As mentioned, the deepest face is that of the Cobra Speed series, followed by the Ping G5 fairways.

 

The Nike T60 also has quite a deep face, but not as much as the above. My T60 3 wood was about the same as my Cobra 4.

 

Of course, if you want a really deep faced 3 wood, the Nike SQ driver is available with a 16* degree loft, as is the Callaway Ft-3.

I sought the same thing beginning earlier this year. I tried the Titleist PT. It has a deeper face, but is also very short heel-to-toe. The face curvature didn't appeal to my eye. I don't like Nike, so the T60 was not an option I considered.

 

More recently, I tried the Sonartec line. You absolutely must try them. The face springs like a driver, something I'd never experienced, and can't explain. I ended up with a 14* Sonartec SS 3.5 with the NV75S shaft. Working well for me. Penetrating flight. Very nice looking at address.

 

The NP-99 is a mix of the older SS 2 and SS 3...all three of which were more difficult to find with a good shaft in them (although they certainly exist). The SS 2.5 and SS 3.5 (current line) are available with a few different shafts: Fujikura Tour Platform Something...YS-6...and NV75. Custom orders also available (i.e. NV85), but I found the NV75S to work well enough for me.

I would agree the Cobra X Speed fairways are deep faced---probably too deep for effective use out of the rough. The sole treatment doesn't help as it has a bulge on the bottom that effectively makes the face even deeper.

Perhaps Titleist 980f strong series could be up your alley? Ive seen plenty of guys ROCK these babies and the strong versions have deeper face for a flatter/more penetrating flight. Can't beat Titleist and can be had for a song, just my 2 cents tho.

I didn't realize this had so many replies... thanks guys! Looks like I've got some testing to do at the pro shop soon.

 

The cobra looks interesting, and everyone (including many outside of this thread) seems to be raving about sonartec. I'm willing to give the T60 a try too. I just have bad memories of Nike's first forged driver line... eek.

 

My ping will definitely stay with me... its treated me very well. Sometimes we all just get a little wanderlust.

If you're willing to spend the money on tour issue equipment nothing and I mean NOTHING beat the adams tour fairway woods. The 4060 14.5* is ridiculous. it is 15 yards longer than the t-60. if you don't want to spend $500-$1000 depending on what shaft you want it understandable. Just wait till the first week of August when the Titleist 906 F2 comes out. deep face and long. I have a adams 4060 tour prototype and it was worth every penny. That thing is long.
