Recommend a 3W for me...

Seriously, it'll be fun.
Right now I have a (tour) Sonartec SS-07 14* with a UST V2 86g S tipped 2" (maybe 2.5"). I play currently to a 9.5, down from a 12 a couple months ago. My strengths are my driver and distance. I swing the big stick around 108 or so, and hit it 270, fairly consistently.

My problem, I play a lot of courses where 270 is too much, straight, and I either need to work the ball, or hit 3w. I can work the ball a bit, but let's be honest here, working the ball with a 460cc driver and today's golf balls isn't easy.

I need to have a 3W that I have confidence in hitting it straight. I don't have that with the Sonartec. I probably bit off more then I can chew with it, and had Joe put in a nice shaft etc. The problem is definitely my swing, don't get me wrong, but I need some thing that is a bit easier to hit from the tee, and get up from the deck. I have a 18.5 degree hybrid, so I'd like some thing in the 14/15* range.

What head/shaft combos are working for everyone? Money isn't an object, but I like to save where possible. I'd definitely consider buying a club and reshafting it immediately.

In the past, I've had a TM burner, 980f, and the sonartec. I hit the TM the best, by far, if that helps. I just get no confidence with the sonartec, it's so small, so I guess I don't like the low profile, maybe.

I've hit the TE Exotics, thanks to Andy at the midwest outing after American airlines thought it would be cool to not throw my sticks on my flight. I liked it, liked the way it set up, just didn't like the nv65 in it. I also read good things about the Nike T60, but heard it's maybe more of a players club?

Thanks for reading this, all help is greatly appreciated!

Except for the Mizuno, you've been suggested more of a player's club.

Any 3 wood is difficult to hit consistently well.

But what was the problem with the Sonartec - not up in the air or banana city?

Try the Ping G5 15*. G5 Fairway

It has a deep face, but is one of the easiest Fw's to get off the deck there is. This makes it great from both tee and fairway.

Stock shafts are NV75 (low ballflight), Ping TFC100F (made by Aldila, mid ballflight), and Prolaunch75 (high ballflight). One of these shafts should suit your needs.

Good luck.

Mizuno is actually a fine selection. I have the MP001 3 wood, and don't plan on dropping it any time soon, though the Sonartec NP-99 is my current gamer. I also had good luck with some of the older Callaway fairways, particularly the SH+ (got that and the SHIII from golow, both tours), but would always go back to the MP001. Mine has an AJTech shaft in it, but I would imagine any decent shaft that has relatively low torque, soft tip, and mid-dish to mid-high kick would make for a lethal combo (don't overlook AccuFLEX here, one of the biggest value shafts on the market IMO). Good luck.

(btw, I've read mixed reviews on Mizuno's more recent fairway woods (mx50?), so as is the case with all recommendations based on a limited profile, try before you buy. :man_in_love: )

I really agree with you. I had the exact same problem with my game(had a V-Steel 13*) and i tried Titleists, callaways and everything. Nike T-60 was by miles the best 3W i have ever hit in my life. Veryvery good distance off the tee and the ball flight is scary strong. I am 100% sure you love this club. Yer you do need the right shaft for this club depending what you want from your 3W.

This is going to sound crazy, but check out some used clubs and see if you can find an Orlimar Trimetal Plus. I've played a PT, 904F, and T60 since, and none of them are as easy to hit as the Trimetal Plus. You can tell it's the Plus model because the loft will be something like "14*+".

Seriously, I traded a T60 for it. That's how much easier it is to hit.

You're using a 14 deg head with a very stiff shaft - tipped heavily - no wonder you say you're having problems getting it up off the deck.

You can bend the Sonartec up to 2 degrees for loft and lie - I'd suggest a bending to 15-16 degrees and a shaft that is more low to mid kick and possibly at 42.5 inches instead of 43 - since you are a long hitter anyway - the shorter shaft should give you more consistency if your club guy can get the Swingweight up.

The SS-07, being shallow, should actually help with the ball getting up in the air. I owned an SS-07 and had a 652 Speeder in it - getting it off the deck wasn't a problem.

Or you can just go to an Adams RPM LP Tour Prototype 16 deg strong 4 wood in X stiff and be very happy if you want a neutral head - knock the length down to 42.5 and it is still at D3. I think gppgolf.com will accept bids under 160.

good luck.

they are not out there in droves, but check out an oldie but a goodie. the ping tisi tec fairway woods. i have had the 3w in the bag for 5 years and nothing has kicked it out yet. they were a fortune brand new, probably why they didnt sell a ton of them. they are still pricey to this day on the used market, but ping's do hold there value well.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

To clarify, the problem with the ss-07 were all the bananas. Originally I did have some problems trying to sweep it off of the deck, but now I can get it in the air fairly consistently, I just can't control it at all.

It just seems to be a bit more of a players club then I need, right now. That's my take at least.

So right now I am going to look at the Mizzy 001 and f50, T60, SQ, SHIII, V Steel, R7 st and ti. I'll probably pick up a few tonight and demo them, thanks for the input!

Ping G5 and Nike SQ are easy to hit all-around from the tee and off the deck. I have the G5 right now with a V2 in it and have been very pleased.

3 wood is a tough club to hit well if you don't practice it though. I think 460cc drivers have "ruined" a lot of people, myself included. :cheesy: I had to decide to devote extra practice to the 3 wood this season to be able to hit it worth a lick, regardless of the model of 3 wood I was attempting to use. Now that I have the swing down better, I have had good luck with many 3 woods (yes, I own all of these...) :man_in_love:

904F 15º YS-6+ FW stiff

G5 15º UST V2 75 stiff

Adams LP Tour 16º Grafalloy Prolaunch 75x

Cleveland Launcher Steel 15º Purple Ice 85 stiff

Ping G2 14º Prolaunch 75 stiff

Nike T60 I owned, but was not too fond of off the deck. Also had the SQ 3 wood. Liked it, but sold it cause obviously I didn't need to stockpile more 3 woods! ;)

I'm waiting for the Titleist 906 to try next. :)

Avoid the Adams RPM LP Tour Proto then -

Look, no 3 wood is going to help the inherent problem with bananas - that's usually not a club issue - you've got a long shaft with a low lofted head - 15 degrees. All weaknesses with the swing show up in the 3 wood because it's off the deck. A draw biased head will help you square up the clubhead but it won't eliminate an OTT move and it won't help with loading up on the right side with back to the target, keeping your right shoulder back and swinging the arms more.

I suggest sticking with a 5 wood and taking more lessons - then getting a 3 wood. If the swing improves, it will improve your entire game and then you might be able to use that Sonartec.

At least, that's what I did - and it worked. But I prefer long term solutions having learned that new clubs just don't do the trick.
