52 56 60?
Hey all, i'm a home course handi of an 8, and just wondering what you use for chipping around the green. I've been a bit off lately, so i decided to choke down on my 56 and it's been going alot better instantly. I was using a 52 and i was just running everything by.

What do you guys use? And you better golfers out there, what do you recommend?

At an ESPN golf school session, I learned to hit with either my 7 or 9 iron for chip shots. Standard grip, ball in the middle of the stance with both feet turned a little towards the target. Swing should almost be like swinging a putter, just a little bit of wrist in it, mostly sholder, hit down and aim for a spot about a third of the distince from you to the pin (hit it right and it will roll out the other 2/3. I'm sure some will say this is right and others will say it's wrong, but it's cut my short game stokes by 2/3 since I started using this technique.

I like using my 52 in most cases. I will use my 60 a lot too in tight situations. For some reason i hate dealing with offset of my irons when chipping, so I try to stay away. I do like using the hybrid when there's plenty of open green in front of me, but not too much fairway(not much height on the shot and the fairway can throw the ball off line depending on how the ball hits it).

I can use my 58 from about anywhere. I will 9/10 times get it within 5 feet with the 58 since i practice a lot with it. 5/10 will be within 2 feet. I will also use my 48PW for big running shots i will rarely if ever use anything lower lofted since i don't play on amazingly huge greens.

I use my 58 from 0-100 yards out with a lot of my shots being almost full swing chips which are lower flying with a ton of spin. They will usually hit once go forward about 6 feet and stop or go another foot of release.

The greens i play on are generally muni courses and are in no way in great shape. I prefer the consistency of air to that of the greens around here which is why I try to play my shots in the air whenever possible to a reasonable extent.

I know the ground game is higher percentage since you have to take into account exactly where the ball will land and if that is upslope downslope etc but I get pretty lucky overall. If i have a huge ridge before the pin sloping upwards toward the pin i will use a lower lofted club to make sure I dont play the huge gamble on where it will land.

EVERYTHING! I hate limiting myself to the clubs I use around the green. I will hit pitch shots with all four of my wedges and I also have a chip and run shot that I use with a 9 iron or similar. I would never advice anyone to stick to a particular chipping club. Use them all!

Around the greens versus "pitch" shots from specific yardages, I do much better just using whatever club and whatever shot I feel most comfortable with... I love lob shots and am usually pretty good at them, but I also love the low runner shots, even the putter from just off the green... use whatever works and you have the most confidence with :help:

Usually a 60 for me. I can deloft it and hit a pinch shot with spin, hit it normal, or flop it. If i have a bad lie around the green I'll open it up and play an explosion shot just like I would out of a bunker...as long as it's not hardpan. It really all depends on the situation though. You can take break out of greens by flying it closer to the hole with a 60. At the same time I may need to drive a low shot into a mound or bank on a green and I'll hit a 54 degree SW. When I played more I often used 7,8,9,PW for bump and run shots.

I agree with progolfer33: I try not to limit myself too much in club selection.

Still, I mostly use a hybrid for rolling chips (I use the same stroke as when I putt) and either a 52 or 60 for higher chips/lobs.

Before I got the hybrids, I sometimes chipped with my 3 wood, but now I use the hybrids instead: a lot easier IMO.

On greenside pitches and bunker shots I tend to use the 60 degree. For short chips I use the 56. For long chips I've recently started using my 48, although I used to use an 8-iron; I switched to the 48 b/c it allowed me to carry a little more fringe if I needed but would still roll out a decent distance.

I really depends on the Greens, Course conditions, etc. Lately I have been carrying 3 Wedges, 52, 56, and 60 b/c it really gives me lots of options as the dog days of summer are here, and it seems the Fairways are really really firm from the lack of rain. So like a boy scout it leaves me prepared for anything without having to get too creative.
