Tiger's Iron Specs

Recommended Posts

So after watching Tiger stroke a nice 3 iron 248 yards into a par 5, my friend says "yeah, but his 3 iron is probably the same loft as a 2 iron used to be."

OK, let's put aside the fact that a 248 yard 2-iron would be pretty sick in its own right. I know that manufacturers have strengthened lofts, but isn't Tiger is a throwback in this regard, playing weak / traditional lofts?

A few years ago, I know golfonline published an article with Tiger's exact iron specs. I can't find it anywhere - anybody have it?

One of reporters at the Buick stated that Tiger "plays OLD SCHOOL lofts" and is very old school and a traditionalist when it comes to his equipment.

Gotta remember though his 2i @ 250 yds is coming in high and relatively soft compared to mortal men. The height he gets out of his iron shots is unbelievable.

Tigers lofts are weak by todays standards, but he leans the shaft forward at address so this evens out. I use weak lofts as well. My irons are as follows. Tiger probably feels the same way. Now that i look at other posts, i use the exact same lofts as tiger.

2=21

3=24

4=27

5=30

6=33

7=37

8=41

9=45

P=50

Not necessarily. Loft is measured with the correct amount of foward lean for an iron. Every iron has some sort of foward lean already built in, even non-offset versions because your hands lead the clubhead from 2 iron (ever so slightly) to wedge (a lot).

Unless you are severly putting the club in the back of your stance or arching the left wrist severly through the ball you are not delofting the club. You are hitting it with it's true loft.

exactly...you guys brag about hitting your 2 irons 245, when in reality its about 220 and 25 yards of roll. Tiger flies his 2 iron 250 and it checks like an 8 irons, when he wants it to. just sick to watch....

The first post about Tiger's irons where we didn't get to hear about his shafts not being X-100 but some Tour prototype that True Temper makes for him. :idhitit: They are made of unobtanium metal as well.

Yeah, but he does play S400s in his wedges.. I have always thought that was a little weird. Seems like he would want more control and a lower flight out of his wedges. I know he said he wants more feel out of his wedges and that is why he likes the S400s in them but to me that is still strange, especially on full wedge shots.

yea, i remember furyk talking in GD or something, where he said he could hit a seven iron 180, 150 or 165, it's just what he was most comfortable and consistent with that turned out to be his "standard" shot.

secondly, i played with a kid on my high school team that could hit a sand wedge 135 yards. the thing is, he had no idea how to not swing like the guy on the hammer infommercial. he was garbage.

i think this whole idea of 245 two irons is completely bogus. swing smooth and hit it straight. you don't get any bonus points hitting shorter clubs in than your sunday afternoon buddies.

ONE more thing... those people who say they hit their 2 iron 245 are the same people who look 30 yards farther than they should for their lost top flite xl and hold me up when i'm trying to play.

My favorite would be the the TM CGB irons, which they say are THE LONGEST and get the most INCREDIBLE distances:

3 19°

4 21°

5 23°

6 26°

7 30°

8 34°

9 39°

PW 44°

AW 49°

SW 54°

Can anyone see why? I guess presumably you are supposed to think its because of the superior makeup of the iron and not that those lofts are a club to a club and a half stronger than traditional lofts.

unless your brother is steve williams and he lets you take tigers clubs on a loft and lie machine and test them yourself, no one anywhere knows what tiger's lofts are. just becasue there was an article in a golf magazine that says they are a certain number doesnt make the statement true.

also, what people fail to realize, is that he is a freak of nature and could hit 2 iron 300 yards if need be. for those here that say they hit 2 iron 240-250...great. i'm willing to bet you can do that 1 in 5, 1 in 4 maybe. distances can be misleading...bobby jones said he could hit any club in his bag the same distance at any given time...

Have I ever put forward a claim that the information was true??? I just passed on what I found in a magazine, you need to relax!
