Rsballer10 WITB - End of the year 11/5/23 Update

Recommended Posts

I made a college WITB circa 2011, made another one ~2017 (that thread disappeared), so I figured I'd update at the end of 2023. I've built clubs since 2011, I just enjoy tinkering and trying new things. This year, I did something I thought I would never do, which is to actually get fitted. I am sure glad I did. I don't think I would have spec'd out the fitter did, and the early results are quite impressive. Next step, is to actually get an instructor this offseason and fix my broken swing. I suffered a knee injury in 2018, and played golf/basketball for almost 3 years without knowing anything was wrong. It has had the effect of making my swing hands/timing based. I offset that by becoming a much better wedge player, and improved my game around the greens. I started tracking my handicap around the start of the pandemic, where it began at a 10. My scores had already been dropping before I started keeping track. I was probably a 12 at best, 15 at worst the decade before. My game is entirely self taught, currently sitting at a 4.4 HC. I took the plunge into being professionally fit, and also professionally taught in the future because I don't think I can drop my HC anymore on my own. ANYWAY, here's the bag:

Driver - Cobra LTDx LS 10.5 @ 11.5 - Tensei AV Raw White 65x
This wasn't EXACTLY what I was fitted into, but I couldn't pass up saving 60% buying last years driver. Was fit into the Aerojet at basically the same specs, except for a Kai'li white. Moving the weight to the toe side keeps my left miss in check. Never played an "LS" model driver before, but this driver is working great. Lofting up is giving me a pretty stable flight on draws, and the fades don't over-spin so it's a happy balance.

Fairway - Ping G430 Max 15 - Ping Chrome 75S
I'm liking how easy this is to elevate. The shaft feels pretty heavy, which I like.

Hybrid - Cobra King Tec 19 - MMT 80s
Still getting used to this one. I like the weight in the toe, in the past toe hooks were so bad with hybrids I just used a fairway wood.

Irons - T150 4-PW Project X 6.5 +1/2"
This was the biggest surprise of the fitting. The T150's not so much, they're a great club and Titleist will sell a ton of them. It's a lot more shaft than I've ever used in irons. I told the fitter I wanted better performance in windy conditions, I think these irons will deliver. I hit a few knockdowns this past weekend and the reduction in height was pretty drastic over a full swing.

Wedges - SM8 50F @ 49, 54S @ 55, 60M - DG X100, S200, S200 +1/2"
I've had these for a while now and will probably use project x in my wedges once it's time to replace these. At $50/shaft I'll just wait until the grooves get too dull

Putter - Odyssey White Hot OG 7CH
I'm usually a NP2/anser blade person, but I made it through the whole season with this putter. It kept putting the ball in the hole, so I kept it in the bag.

Good to see someone else with an older budget bag. Those irons look tough to hit.

You know I thought they would be, but I am now hitting my irons better and better everyday. My iron game is seeing rapid improvement. Also, trajectory control is so much easier.

Very Nice! These are great posts. While I love the ott posts with all the eye candy, seeing what people who don't have an unlimited budget play is cool as I'm guessing you put a lot of thought into your bag.

I did put a lot of thought into my bag. A lot of demo's without buying, which is difficult. I also ask lots of questions to clubfitters.

Awesome bag. Those blades look sweet, and that bag is fantastic looking. And I have those wedges too. Really like them and how they play. Plus they're cheap.

I was so surprised how good the wedges were when I first hit them. they are really easy to open up.

Yeah I can just open the 60* up and hit the ball and it'll hit the green and roll about 5 feet and stop. And that's on greens that have been through 90* heat for 10 straight days.

I played the same odyssey 7CH putter all season, but this offseason I've went back to practicing with an anser 2 style putter. I still prefer a blade style head, I just don't control speed as well with bigger putters.

Here is a BL-2 I had made at the start of the pandemic. Oil can finish, ping man grip with 2 wraps of tape, 1 extra layer on the bottom hand. 35.5" length, and the face has the lightest milling I could possibly get. The face is thicker than my Newport 2, so this putter is very firm feeling.

I recently moved back to a Anser style putter after playing a 7S all season.  I know mallets are more forgiving, but I also really struggle with distance control.  I hope it works out for you.
