Golf Pride Tour Wrap Full Cord Alternatives

Any other users out there?
Okay, maybe I should have said "User", since I think I've only seen one other guy around here with these grips...

Anyway, for those of you who like the rough, tear-your-calluses-out and eat-your-gloves types of grips, any recommendations? I use the old school round, full cord Tour Wraps in midsize, which are pretty tough to find now, and even though GP has a new generation of full cord Wraps, they are only available in standard size. I don't like built up grips with 3+ layers of tape because it just doesn't feel as cushy as a straight midsize grip.

I know I could probably go with Crosslines and Tour Velvet Full Cords or some kind of multicompound, since they all come in midsize, but was wondering if there was anything else to check out. I know I'll invariably have to take a trip to a store close by to feel some up, but wanted to post here too. Thanks.

I guess this isn't so helpful, but to me it seems like you already identified your two best bets: Crossline Cords and Midsize Multicompounds.

I am a tear your hands kind of cord player and prefer a slightly larger grip will also disliking built up grips. Tour Velvet Cord Wraps were an historic favorite of mine.

I find that Lamkin grips always seem to have a slighly larger feel than GP grips even in standard sizes, which is a plus in my book.

I have moved to the BCT cord because the extra softness is not a drawback for me since i don't wear a glove, now I don't need to "break in" my grips. You can also build them up an extra wrap and they don't feel so bad because they are so soft to start with. Prior to playing BCTs I played the Crossline Tour Black. I always thought they have an appropriately firm feel without feeling as hard as the original Tour Velvet Cord. I think these are a great option.

Finally, the Midsize multicompounds seem like a perfect replacement for you? I can't think of another grip on the market that would be better given your love of Tour Velvet Wrap Full Cords.

Thanks, Judge. Your feedback is definitely helpful, I appreciate the comments on the Lamkins, as I've no experience with their grips. You're correct that the MCs seem to be the way for me, as they are the most similar in texture and size, but with that softer feel on the lower hand. I've also been reading some comments on the VDRs, which even though are a non-cord grip, seem to be getting decent reviews around here.

Wanted to bump this thread. I used to play these grips and remembered how much I loved them. I know they are still able to be had on eBay, but does anyone make anything comparable these days? I miss these grips and may rip off the new Lamkin UTx grips I just put on because I love these so much.

I used to only use the roughest cord grips I could find. Until I found the golf pride tour velvet, ribbed of course. I remember thinking no way I will like a non cord grip, no way. I won't use anything but tour velvet now. IMO it's the best grip made. Obviously that isn't the best grip for everyone but I would tell you to try it if you haven't already. They come in midsize too.

Thanks, good to see another Tour Wrap Cord user. I've stocked up on standard size, non BCT Tour Wraps now, purchasing the occasional mid size that does pop up on eBay every now and then. Just have to get used to the built up feel.

The NDMC are still the only real alternative, but I realize I value the texture of a wrap as much as the cord, so I've found that I like the Tacki Mac Performance Pro wrap in midsize. It's non cord, but much firmer than the GP 2G Tour Wrap and Lamkin offerings. The Royal Grip wrap offerings are good too, but only offered in standard size. I also tried the Winn Pro Wrap, which is a textured wrap and very firm, but found it was slick at times.

I think one of my reasons I love the Tour Wrap cord so much was because of the size and shape. I know there are regular sized grips in all shapes and colors and different variations ... but the Tour Wrap cord had a different feel in the shape and texture than anything else.

I've answered my own question I think ... I love the wrap feel .... I love the Tour Wrap Cord ... I need some ... SOON.

Thanks, those are all good options if cord was the only consideration, especially the Z Grip (except for the crazy price). However, like sTmGolfer said, there's something about the shape and size of the Tour Wrap Cords that no other grip really has. It's the combination of both the firm wrap plus the cord that made those unique.

Here's a picture of Henrik Stenson's, apparently he uses them with 2 extra wraps, not sure if it's midsize +2 or standard +2, either way, he might be one of the few left on Tour using these:

And just for the sake of posting pictures here are three I was able to find on eBay a few months ago:

Thanks! Those look very promising. I've been using a mix of older Tour Wrap Cords, NDMC, and the tacky non-cord midsize Tour Wraps and Tacki Mac equivalents, but will definitely look into the Lamkins once they are out.

Pup,

Have you tried the already mentioned Z-Cord Midsize? I didn't like the way they looked at first. Not "aggressive" enough. But after I tried one on a sand wedge and a shag bag's worth of balls out of a bunker, they roughed my ungloved hands rather nicely. And their service life is as good as anything I've encountered.

I played Crossline cords forever and these Z cords curbed 'em first rattle out of the box.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I have a couple Z-Cords, thanks, but still prefer how the wrap contours feel. Basically, I want my cake and to eat it too, so the wrap feel, with extra surface traction, which I think the newer wrap options do quite nicely too. These newer "semi-cord" Lamkins and textured wraps are likely going to be the way to go. There's also the Royal Grip Sand Wrap and V Sand Wraps, but those don't come in midsize.

The Z is definitely more aggressive and rougher than the usual TV Cord or Crossline Cord.

Only took me half a year, but I finally ordered a few Lamkin UTX Wraps to try. Cord doesn't look all that much, but apparently it's the material plus the little bit of cord that are supposed to work together for traction. I'll try them as-is for a start then maybe sand them down a little to see if that does anything. I've been using GP Tour Wraps 2.0 and Tacki Mac Itomic Wraps lately, which I am liking more than I thought, but I'm always sucker for a corded wrap.

I have been a user for more than 3 decades... no doubt the grippiest grip out there...

Supplies have been exhausted... no WTF an I going to use?

I do not wear a glove and have never for 46 years... and will not.

How are those Lamkin, they look close but not as grippy?

The Lamkins don't feel as rough but are grippy in their own way. The combination of the light cord and the tacky material combine quite well. The tack actually makes them a little grippier when wet compared to the Tour Wraps. They are also slightly softer feeling than the Tour Wraps, but it isn't bad at all. They are not a one for one substitute, but rather, a slightly different alternative if you want a corded wrap grip. Well, the only alternative really. The only other textured wrap on the market is the Winn Pro, which feels thin, hard, and slick to me.

No real sense for durability yet, as I only have them on driver shafts. I do plan to slap some on my wedges, but can't bear to cut off the Tour Wraps on those yet, even though they are worn down. I keep sanding them down, hoping they'll last another season but I think it's the end of the road now, for the ones on my wedges at least.

I'm just getting back to the game after about a total 15 year layoff. I cannot believe the changes in equipment. Stuff I never thought would go away, such as the GP full cord ribbed tour wrap, not to mention Titleist wound balata balls, due to the ubiquity on tour for years. I'm not sure what I'm going to use now. I feel like Rumplestilskin. I guess some of the Lampkin stuff is as close as I'll get.

Hogan must be turning in his grave.

Seriously the best grip in history.  Won't relaunch these...but you get 250 different NDMC color combos.

I firmly believe it’s a durability thing.  You could get a season or two out of the tour wrap cords or victory cords.  The ndmc wear out after about 20 round or 8 months, which ever comes first
