Ben Hogan Precision/Saber 1 irons

Recommended Posts

new Acquisitions
Thought you Hogan fans would like to see my latest Hogan finds. These are 4 different years of the early Precision and Saber 1 irons. There is a 54 Precision Long Hosel hash marks with leather grip and rocket shaft, A 1957 Precision rings on hosel Leather grip and rocket shaft. A 1958 Rings on hosel leather grip regular TT shaft and a Knurled ring on hosel 59 with leather grip and stiff TT.
I was able to do a partial trade and money with the person who needed some precision loose irons and a couple of precision wedges I had. I feel very fortunate as I have only seen a couple of Precision 1 irons in all my years, so to get 4 is incredible. I would be greedy to ask for the 56 short hosel I guess!!

Nice. I used to collect BH 2-irons. The 1i would be just too difficult to find.

Outstanding!

4 Hogan 1 irons!

Having been fortunate emough in my lifetime to have played Merion, (June, 1987)
that Hy Peskin photo of Hogan comes to mind....

And as meticulous as Hogan was, he most likely had his hands on at least one of these.......quite possibly....ALL of them.

Otherwise, they NEVER make it out of the factory..

Speaking of impossible to find are the early Macgregor Ben Hogan 1 irons. The one he used at Merion was of course the Macgregor Ben Hogan personal model which head was like the 1622 model head. I have about 7 different sets of Macgreogr Ben Hogan iron sets and have never seen a Macgregor Hogan 1 iron of any model, has anyone???quote name='rex235' timestamp='1310568576' post='3387986']

AWESOME!

I am a long time Hogan fanatic -- did try the 200 yard shot at Merion, it was a LONG way in 1988 when I tried it with a 1 iron.

Played more like 215 and uphill....I was 20-25 yards short!

Spooky thing..when we drive up the Merion driveway at 7 am, it was misty and kind of foggy...we drove past some guy hitting balls, wearing grey, with a Hogan cap and a flat swing...I SWEAR, we thought we saw the ghost of Hogan.

PS, I have a set of 2-9 precision long hosel, not sure the exact year.

TM M2 driver (2016)
TM M2 3 and 5 woods (2017)
PXG 19 degree
Mizuno MP 25, 4-9 (about to change)
Miura CB-57 PW
Miura wedges, 53 and 59, Y grind
1964/5 Wilson 8813

I took the Long Hosel Precision 54 out for 9 holes the other night. No practice with it until about the 3rd hole ,a hole that plays about 380,dogleg left. I am always happy to get around the 150 yardrs marker, usually hit a 3 wood. I had never hit the 1 iron before, leather grip was kind of slippery so wet down my hands, swung easy ,Nice right to left draw, low trajectory ,235 away, dead center, butter was dripping off the head, unreal!!!
I also had a Hogan Persimmon from 1959, DFD that I had hit once, and not too well ,so thought I would hit it also. Hit it great ,slight fade, 2 yards past the 1 iron. I felt like Ben was looking over my shoulder with a slight grin..

I have been collecting Hogan 1 irons for a long time and have around 40 different ones. I do have 1 Macgregor Ben Hogan 1 iron. It is a Texan Reg. No. 1322. Original True Temper Rocket shaft, original ferrule with serial number (27837A) but, unfortunately, the head has been rechromed. Its still a beautiful club and the only Macgregor Hogan 1 iron I've ever seen.

I have a few Hogan 1 and 2 irons that used over the years. Oldest one is the '72 Apex though. Would love to have one of the Precision ones one of these days.

I don't use one anymore, in fact, the lowest iron in my bag is now just a 4-iron (sigh). About the only time a 1-iron appears in my bag is when I go to Bandon Dunes every year. I pull out my lob wedge (useless on those tight lies) and stick in the butter knife. Depending on the wind and lie, it usually gets used once or twice a round :)

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver   1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood   1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex)  Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex)   Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped)    Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)
Odyssey ProType 9 putter

Teevons-

Wanted to show you the LH 1 irons used in the past-
The PowerBilt is the one used from 1975-1985, and authored one of the best shots of my golfing life.
The other two have been used sparingly, but ALL are of matching sets- 1-SW.
