I always use a quarter heads up with the prez looking at the hole. No particular year but Washington has to look where the ball is supposed to go.

To repeat what friend jswaykos says, if you're using something that's as much a visible distraction as a golf ball and which will stop anything hitting it just a surely as a golf ball why waste time marking? Just leave the ball there.

The idea is that out of courtesy to your fellow players you place an unobtrusive, easy to ignore marker on the green instead of leaving your ball there. The other players are not impressed with how cool you are because you're using a poker chip instead of a normal ball marker. Trust me.

For my part as long as it's not in or near my line I don't care if you use a penny, your foot, your golf bag or just leave the ball on the green. But if you're going to "mark" it, act like you've been on a golf course before and use a regular marker.
I don't have a problem with the poker chips. Why? 1) They are easy to identify so they help speed up the game in terms of identifying who is away. Can't say that about the guy using a penny or a dime. 2) Because a poker chip is easily identifiable, it prevents people from accidentally tap dancing on your line. 3) I have never seen a putt strike somebody's poker chip. If it did, I would consider it a very poor putt for obviously missing its intended line. 4) Lastly, the reason why somebody would mark with a poker chip instead of just leaving the ball there? To clean it.

1) Does anyone need help knowing if they are furthest away? If they do a poker chip won't help!!

2) Fair point but it's part of your ettiquette to know where your partners balls are and avoid the general area. I admit it wouldn't help if they had a marker which wasn't easy to see on the green.

3) Probably because people are even more careful about asking someone to move a larger marker. There is a danger it slows the game by requiring more moves due to people being paranoid about hitting them. I've actually seen people going to mark their ball asking a partner if "that's ok marked where it is?" The partner says "Yeah that's fine" only for the player to slap down a big coin or worse use a tee. Then the other player has to say "Actually could you move it a couple to the right / left?" It does slow down play.

4) I think you've missed the point there. It was not "why mark the ball at all", rather in the context of not affecting your partners putt a poker chip would be just as detrimental to their putt as hitting their ball (penalty notwithstanding!)

Canadian quarter. (Dime if I'm close to someone else's line) Because of their composition they never seem to corrode and stay nice an shiny. Plus I love "the Great White North". :-)

I'm currently using a 500eur chip from the Casino de Monte-Carlo.

I found it in my suit pocket after I had returned from the grand prix last year. I'll encash it when I go back in May, and perhaps use one slightly less valuable.

I have been using the new gold dollar coins.

Me too, until it fell out of my pocket and got lost. Now I use a penny just in case it happens again.

Well ... my company sponsors tourneys at conferences ... so I actually have custom ball markers with my company logo on them. (We give them away at the conferences).

Before that ... I had a One Pound coin with Elizabeth II on the front that I found in a bunker at St. Andrews. But it was quite thick.

I have some 2p and 50p coins from a trip to the UK that are handy, as they are easily distinguishable from other markes... Also some Sacagawea dollar coins for the same reason.

My absolute favorite was a magnetic Bradley University ball marker. It was given to me by a BU alum that I had the privilege to play golf with once or twice each year. The occasion was a beat down given to my Salukis by his Braves... using it was a nice way to remember the fun times I had playing with him. I used it for years, and finally wore the paint off. It was the only non-Saluki logo-ed product to ever make my bag.

I've been trying to find a groat or half-groat from the era of James II (Scot, 1437-1460) for the last couple years to use as a ball marker. To encourage archery practice, he banned "gowf" through his parliament. (Even though his son and grandson followed the ban, a coin from James III or IV wouldn't be as cool.

Besides, James II managed to blow himself up trying to fire a cannon.

Figure its fitting, especially on those Sunday rounds. :)
